A Grand Crossing man was charged with killing a 15-year-old boy and wounding a 12-year-old boy in a shooting Thursday afternoon.
Daniel Navas Maiver, 19, was arrested in the 7400 block of South Harvard Avenue about 12:10 a.m. Friday. He was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, Chicago police said. On Sunday, he was ordered held pending trial.
After borrowing his aunt’s car, Navas Mavier picked up a friend and parked near Tilden High School, prosecutors said. He then followed a group of six people that had been socializing all day — who prosecutors noted didn’t make any threats toward Navas Mavier — and told his friend to follow him.
He allegedly shot the two teens about 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of West 47th Street in the Canaryville neighborhood, police said. Alex Durante, 15, was shot in the hip and pronounced dead Thursday night, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The younger boy was shot in the chest and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. He has since stabilized, prosecutors said.
Surveillance video shows Navas Maiver firing shots at the victims, and five shell casings were found at the scene, prosecutors said. Navas Maiver admitted to the shooting and identified himself in the video when interviewed by police, which was also confirmed with hits from a license plate reader nearby, prosecutors said.
When he was arrested, a Glock handgun was recovered that prosecutors say has been matched to the shell casings in lab testing.
