A police-involved shooting erupted in Englewood early Wednesday on the South Side leaving four people including three officers injured, according to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and fire officials.
The incident began about 5 a.m. with a “10-1,” an emergency call for an officer in distress, in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue, officials said.
According to a source, the incident involved shots fired at police and by police after someone used a car to run into at least one officer.
As reporters on the scene about 9 a.m. waited for a news conference to begin, police spokesperson Tom Ahern told them the officers hospitalized had “minor injuries” and were not shot but may have been hit by a vehicle.
Two suspects were in custody, including one who was taken to St. Bernard Hospital with injuries, according to Ahern, who added the injured suspect was not shot.
Ahern said there were three different scenes connected to this incident — 58th Street and Princeton Avenue, 70th Street and Yale Avenue and the 71st Street ramp to the Dan Ryan Expressway.
Fire department spokesperson Larry Merritt said one civilian and three officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The police officers, who were not shot, suffered injuries that were “nothing serious,’’ said Merritt, but the condition of the four person was not known.
Anyone with information on the shooting should call 312-746-3609.
