Benchmark prices in New York and London are down about 15 percent in the last few days, a drop that is matched only by the declines on <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/markets#business-briefing\">Wall Street<\/a>, in Asian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/asia-markets\/\">stock markets<\/a>, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2025-04-02\/musk-s-dystopian-vision-isn-t-selling-teslas-or-candidates?embedded-checkout=true&amp;sref=gAQr8Hwd\">Tesla\u2019s appeal<\/a>. Crude oil went from the mid $70s a barrel when Trump was elected the second time to the upper $50s (briefly) on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. President Donald Trump promised to bring down energy prices, and on that front at least, he has delivered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to his trade war, crude oil prices have plunged. Crude oil went from the mid $70s a barrel when Trump was elected the second time to the upper $50s (briefly) on Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news, such as it is, is that cheaper oil is a win, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gleefully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PEWilliams_\/status\/1908943857821049049\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cheaper oil means cheaper gasoline. The bad news is that there may not be jobs to drive to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global markets have not responded kindly to Trump\u2019s war on trade, and serious economists (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/07\/trump-tariffs-higher-prices-us-recession-jp-morgan-jamie-dimon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and even<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> investment bankers) worry about a recession. It might get worse: On Monday, Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/04\/07\/trump-threat-china-50-percent-tariffs-retaliatory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatened<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> China with additional 50 percent tariffs on top of the 34 percent tariff imposed last week, which itself came atop the 20 percent tariffs previously levied, in addition to all other tariffs, which are also still in effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheap oil is, in a reversal from decades past, bad news for the United States\u2014and especially for some<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deeply Republican parts of the country, which have in the past decade and a half revolutionized the oil business and made the United States the greatest producer of oil and natural gas in the history of the world. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he United States <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=63824#:~:text=For%20the%20full%20year%20of,the%20current%20annual%20production%20record.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pumped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about 13.2 million barrels of oil a day on average last year; Saudi Arabia isn\u2019t even in the double digits at the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem dates from last week, when Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/04\/02\/trump-tariffs-liberation-day-reprisals-expected-china-vietnam-europe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched a trade war<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against every country on earth, which has led the world to worry about rising prices and slowing growth. Recessions mean less demand for oil, which is why West Texas and Brent crude have spent the last few days in the red, and are still looking sickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That would have been bad enough for the oil patch. But Trump also put tariffs on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/03\/12\/trump-steel-aluminum-tariffs-trade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">steel imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It just so happens that the United States <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/foreign-trade\/Press-Release\/steel\/steelp_2412.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many of the pipes, tubes, and casings that are used in the oil and gas industry. So higher costs for production, coupled with a lower price for the product, are suboptimal, despite the Trump administration\u2019s vows to turbocharge the U.S. energy business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeglobalization creates headwinds for energy dominance,\u201d said Kevin Book, the founder of ClearView Energy Partners, an energy consultancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason that cheaper oil is bad is because the United States\u2019 oil patch is not a low-cost producer, like those of countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq are. Blasting apart the earth\u2019s underbelly with pipes and proppants and horizontal rigs is an expensive undertaking. It\u2019s hard to say exactly what the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rystadenergy.com\/news\/upstream-breakeven-shale-oil-inflation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">break-even price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is for U.S. shale producers, or, perhaps more to the point, where their break-in point is for drilling new holes. It is somewhere between $45 and $60 a barrel. The market is perilously close right now to killing the golden goose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just oil, though. U.S. natural gas is not just a big business\u2014it has also been a big <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/ng\/hist\/n9133us2m.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">export business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Europe, before things escalated, was talking about buying more liquefied natural gas to pacify Trump, and also as a way to wean for good off Russian energy supplies. Japan, South Korea, and even China were big takers of U.S. gas in recent years. South Korea and Japan were two other big targets of Trump\u2019s latest trade salvo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China, in addition to its 34 percent reprisals, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-07\/china-halts-us-lng-imports-in-longest-run-since-last-trade-war?embedded-checkout=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced a freeze<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on purchases of U.S. gas. The last time that Beijing did that, during another Trump trade war, it lasted more than a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t want to lose the Asia-Pacific market,\u201d said Anne-Sophie Corbeau, an energy expert at Columbia University\u2019s Center for Global Energy Policy. \u201cTrump wants to sell more U.S. LNG, but he is doing things that move us in the opposite direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump\u2019s trade wars may be called off this week, or they may escalate. The fact that nobody knows is precisely part of the problem\u2014and the reason that markets are nervous, investors are skittish, and drillers are hard to get on the phone.
