{"id":807,"date":"2025-03-23T02:38:52","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T02:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=807"},"modified":"2025-03-23T02:38:52","modified_gmt":"2025-03-23T02:38:52","slug":"trump-deportations-target-university-students-over-israel-palestine-views","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=807","title":{"rendered":"Trump Deportations Target University Students Over Israel-Palestine Views"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trump administration appears to be ramping up efforts to deport foreign-born students who are in the United States legally but whom <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/trump-deportation-georgetown-graduate-student-00239754\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authorities accuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of opposing U.S. foreign policy\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/13\/nx-s1-5326015\/mahmoud-khalil-deportation-arrests-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without offering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any evidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of Friday morning, U.S. officials have now moved to deport two such individuals. On March 8, immigration agents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/columbia-university-mahmoud-khalil-ice-15014bcbb921f21a9f704d5acdcae7a8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the United States who is of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/16\/nyregion\/mahmoud-khalil-columbia-university.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palestinian descent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was a graduate student at Columbia University until December and a prominent figure in the school\u2019s student protests against the war in Gaza.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then on Monday, immigration officials arrested Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University postdoctoral fellow and Indian national who is in the United States on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/03\/20\/trump-deportation-georgetown-researcher-detained-immigration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student visa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TriciaOhio\/status\/1902524674291966261\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on X, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson accused Suri of promoting Hamas propaganda and having ties to a senior Hamas advisor. However, his lawyer has said that Suri was targeted because of his wife\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/trump-deportation-georgetown-graduate-student-00239754\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palestinian heritage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Georgetown has said it has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/trump-deportation-georgetown-graduate-student-00239754\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not received<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a reason for his detention and is not aware of any illegal activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/nyregion\/mahmoud-khalil-new-york-louisiana-legal-fight.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khalil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/trump-deportation-georgetown-graduate-student-00239754\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been charged with a crime, according to their respective <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/georgetown-suri-detained.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lawyers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, in both cases Trump administration officials have cited an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/16\/mahmoud-khalil-first-amendment-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obscure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/georgetown-suri-detained.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rarely used provision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Immigration and Nationality Act that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?req=granuleid:USC-prelim-title8-section1227&amp;num=0&amp;edition=prelim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empowers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the secretary of state to deport any noncitizen whose continued presence in the United States, they believe, \u201cwould have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moves have set the stage for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/nyregion\/mahmoud-khalil-new-york-louisiana-legal-fight.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fierce legal battles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and roiled universities, some of which are already wrestling with the Trump administration\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/education\/columbia-is-nearing-agreement-to-give-trump-what-he-wants-14315bb3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/20\/us\/trumps-battles-with-colleges-could-change-american-culture-for-a-generation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hundreds of millions of dollars in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/trump-university-of-pennsylvania-funding-cuts-transgender-athletes-ncaa\/\">federal funding<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to its own vision for American universities. Trump\u2019s deportation moves have also sparked outrage and alarm over free speech, particularly in universities and over Israel and Gaza, as the administration appears to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/judge-bars-trump-administration-deporting-pro-palestinian-student-2025-03-20\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">targeting individuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who have expressed criticism of the Israeli government or support for the Palestinian cause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrump has made no effort to disguise the fact that the arrests of academics like Suri and Mahmoud Khalil is intended to have a chilling effect and discourage the free expression of political views which Trump dislikes,\u201d Democratic Virginia Rep. Don Beyer said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arlnow.com\/2025\/03\/20\/beyer-speaks-out-about-rosslyn-mans-arrest-by-immigration-agents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn both cases, the administration has punished speech with frightening, extreme measures that, if it happened in another country, most of us would not hesitate to call \u2018authoritarianism,\u2019\u201d said Beyer, who added that the arrest of Suri\u2014Beyer\u2019s constituent\u2014\u201cis a clear violation of his constitutional rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet even with these legal challenges, Khalil and Suri\u2019s arrests may be just the start of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinian-campus-student-protests-war-cadbf05cf542c08dc3c664431b7a1f4f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broader deportation crackdown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against foreign-born students or academics who express or are tied to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/columbia-university-mahmoud-khalil-ice-15014bcbb921f21a9f704d5acdcae7a8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-Palestinian activism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014even if those people are in the country legally. Campus protests that swept the country last year sparked a national debate over U.S. support for Israel, free speech on university campuses, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2024\/04\/25\/student-protests-palestine-israel-college-columbia-university-arrests-antisemitism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antisemitism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014issues that Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/20\/us\/trumps-battles-with-colleges-could-change-american-culture-for-a-generation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seized upon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his presidential campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are going to get this anti-American insanity out of our institutions once and for all,\u201d Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/20\/us\/trumps-battles-with-colleges-could-change-american-culture-for-a-generation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in one campaign video, adding that he would reclaim \u201cour once-great educational institutions from the radical left.\u201d \u201cWe are going to have real education in America,\u201d he declared.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in office, Trump has vowed to move full-speed ahead with his deportations. After Khalil\u2019s arrest, Trump labeled him a \u201cRadical Foreign Pro-Hamas Student\u201d in a post on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114139222625284782\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth Social<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and declared that \u201cthis is the first arrest of many to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the student arrests so far have been tied to the Columbia University protests. Also in March, Ranjani Srinivasan, a Columbia graduate student, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/15\/nyregion\/columbia-student-kristi-noem-video.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fled to Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after her student visa was revoked and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents showed up at her apartment. Srinivasan had shared social media posts about human rights violations in Gaza and attended a handful of protests, according to her lawyers, and was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/15\/nyregion\/columbia-student-kristi-noem-video.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">briefly detained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at another protest that she said she was not participating in. U.S. officials have also arrested Leqaa Kordia\u2014a Palestinian from the West Bank who was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/columbia-protestor-arrested-overstaying-student-visa-campus-khalil-rcna196450\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the Columbia University protests\u2014for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us\/columbia-protester-leqaa-kordia.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overstaying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a student visa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know there are more students at Columbia and other Universities across the Country who have engaged in pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity, and the Trump Administration will not tolerate it,\u201d Trump declared in his post on Truth Social. \u201cWe will find, apprehend, and deport these terrorist sympathizers from our country\u2014never to return again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That pledge was echoed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. \u201cWe will be revoking the visas and\/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported,\u201d he said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/marcorubio\/status\/1898858967532441945?s=42\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post on X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/13\/nx-s1-5326015\/mahmoud-khalil-deportation-arrests-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week, DHS Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar accused Khalil of \u201cpromoting this antisemitism activity\u201d and claimed that his visa was revoked \u201cfor supporting a terrorist type organization.\u201d But when asked, Edgar did not explain exactly what conduct Khalil engaged in to warrant his arrest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think you can see it on TV, right?\u201d Edgar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/13\/nx-s1-5326015\/mahmoud-khalil-deportation-arrests-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe\u2019ve invited and allowed the student to come into the country, and he\u2019s put himself in the middle of the process of basically pro-Palestinian activity. And at this point, like I said, the Secretary of State can review his visa process at any point and revoke it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Trump administration is targeting me as part of a broader strategy to suppress dissent,\u201d Khalil said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/mar\/19\/mahmoud-khalil-statement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was dictated to family and friends from a detention facility in Louisiana. \u201cVisa holders, green-card carriers, and citizens alike will all be targeted for their political beliefs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Suri\u2019s case, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/georgetown-university-graduate-student-detained-immigration-authoritie-rcna197206\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Georgetown researcher of \u201cactively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media\u201d and having \u201cclose connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas,\u201d without offering any evidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suri has no criminal record and denies McLaughlin\u2019s allegations, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/georgetown-suri-detained.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to his lawyer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Suri\u2019s wife, Mapheze Saleh, is a master\u2019s student at Georgetown University and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/trump-deportation-georgetown-graduate-student-00239754\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. citizen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Saleh\u2019s father, Ahmed Yousef\u2014Suri\u2019s father-in-law\u2014is a former advisor to Hamas\u2019s assassinated top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/georgetown-suri-detained.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After leaving his post in the Hamas-run government more than a decade ago, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, Yousef has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/year-after-oct-7-hamas-faces-dissent-gaza-war-takes-toll-2024-10-08\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publicly questioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hamas\u2019s rationale for its Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Yousef has said that Suri has not engaged in any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/georgetown-suri-detained.html\">political activism<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s good that there is a prisoner deal, but it did not require all this bloodshed and destruction,\u201d Yousef <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/07\/world\/middleeast\/hamas-israel-prisoner-release-ashraf-zughayer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a phone interview with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOct. 7, in my opinion, was a terrible error.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a petition for Suri\u2019s release filed by his wife, she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acluva.org\/sites\/default\/files\/field_documents\/ecf_6-1_-_declaration.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yousef, her father, had previously served as a political advisor to the prime minister of Gaza and as the deputy of foreign affairs in Gaza. After leaving the Gaza government in 2010, she wrote, in 2011 he started the House of Wisdom \u201cto encourage peace and conflict resolution in Gaza.\u201d He is still at the House of Wisdom and is an international relations professor at the Islamic University of Gaza.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saleh also noted in her petition that she herself had previously worked as a translator in the Hamas-run Foreign Ministry of Gaza around 2011. She also wrote that prior to the war in Gaza, she \u201coften worked as a freelance journalist for Middle Eastern newspapers and media outlets, reporting on politics in Palestine and India.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Saleh began sharing social media posts on what was unfolding in Gaza in the wake of Oct. 7, the couple was accused of having \u201cties to Hamas,\u201d faced online attacks, and received threatening social media messages, she wrote in her petition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI learned that certain websites online had targeted me personally because of my father\u2019s former role in the Gaza government, and because of my social media posts,\u201d she wrote. \u201cMultiple articles were published about me and my family, and eventually about my husband.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Suri\u2019s arrest, she added, \u201cI feel completely unsafe and can\u2019t stop looking at the door, terrified that someone else will come and take me and the children away as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/03\/21\/trump-deportation-columbia-university-palestinian-protest-mahmoud-khalil-badar-khan-suri\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Trump administration appears to be ramping up efforts to deport foreign-born students who are in the United States legally but whom authorities accuse of opposing U.S. foreign policy\u2014without offering any evidence.\u00a0 As of Friday morning, U.S. officials have now moved to deport two such individuals.
