What\u2019s more, the Trump administration revised the employment numbers upward for March and April.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing you can say about the U.S. economy is that it is remarkably resilient, even if there are some storm clouds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/special-report\/2026\/06\/01\/the-special-role-of-the-treasury-market-is-in-peril\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the horizon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/empsit_06052026.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. jobs report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blew past expectations and showed a gain of 172,00 jobs in May, even though the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3 percent. What\u2019s more, the Trump administration revised the employment numbers upward for March and April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the worries about stagflation and a sluggish economy may be overblown, despite Trump administration policies that are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/13\/tariffs-hurt-not-helped-the-u-s-economy-trump-trade-ieepa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weighing down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the economic recovery, such as widespread <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/06\/04\/trump-forced-labor-tariffs-ustr-trade-section-301\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tariffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a war in Iran that has raised <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/06\/01\/iran-war-hormuz-energy-crisis-how-long-last\/\">energy prices<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>That is great news for incoming Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who has to balance a dual mandate that seeks to both defeat inflation and raise employment. Coupled with a not-dead-yet 1.6 percent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/data\/gdp\/gross-domestic-product\">GDP growth<\/a> in the first quarter, the Trump economy is almost surpassing even low expectations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. jobs numbers matter for the rest of the world for a simple reason: They influence the rate at which the Federal Reserve eases, or tightens, the money supply. Many countries have debt (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2025\/12\/03\/developing-countries-debt-outflows-hit-50-year-high-during-2022-2024\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lots of it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, actually) that is denominated in dollars. If the Fed is relaxed, then so is the rest of the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the Fed should be relaxed, given the latest report, because it only has one dragon to slay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe surge in payrolls in May along with upward revisions in prior months are more than enough <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to allow the Federal Reserve to keep policy steady for an extended period as it focuses on the inflation side of its dual mandate,\u201d Oxford Economics said in a research note released on June 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- fp_choose_placement_related_posts --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is, though, one dark spot in the latest employment numbers, as in many before them: While the U.S. jobs market is churning for things such as health care, leisure, and local government, mining and manufacturing remain afterthoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the month, food services and drinking places added 48,000 jobs,\u201d the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said. It does make perfect sense these days. On the other hand, \u201cemployment showed little change over the month in other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, information, professional and business services, and other services,\u201d it added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs and wars have made inputs\u2014items such as raw materials, oil, gas, diesel, steel, aluminum, and more\u2014more expensive, which has acted as a sea anchor on the otherwise healthy economy. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DlTNIH8znn0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testimony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the Senate this week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sought to boast about the health of the U.S. manufacturing sector but misplaced his data. Actually, there is not a rebound in investment or construction in manufacturing facilities in the United States but<\/span> a <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/TLMFGCONS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collapse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The golden age <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/573913be-f4e6-444e-9e55-65fe57f5286f?syn-25a6b1a6=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got tarnished<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Trump\u2019s economy has not been a trainwreck, but it has shown record-high <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EGSPC\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stock market tickers<\/span><\/a> and decent GDP <a href=\"http:\/\/growth.he\">growth<\/a>.
