{"id":4863,"date":"2026-05-23T06:20:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T06:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=4863"},"modified":"2026-05-23T06:20:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T06:20:18","slug":"trump-orders-5000-u-s-troops-to-poland-reversing-hegseth-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=4863","title":{"rendered":"Trump Orders 5,000 U.S. Troops to Poland, Reversing Hegseth Decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Welcome back to World Brief, where we\u2019re looking at the <strong>United States<\/strong>\u2019 military presence in <strong>Poland<\/strong>, <strong>Mexico<\/strong> expanding trade ties with the <strong>European Union<\/strong>, and greater collaboration across the <strong>Asia-Pacific<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>World Brief will be off on Monday, March 25, for the U.S. holiday of Memorial Day.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<p>Welcome back to World Brief, where we\u2019re looking at the <strong>United States<\/strong>\u2019 military presence in <strong>Poland<\/strong>, <strong>Mexico<\/strong> expanding trade ties with the <strong>European Union<\/strong>, and greater collaboration across the <strong>Asia-Pacific<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>World Brief will be off on Monday, March 25, for the U.S. holiday of Memorial Day.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>\u2018We Don\u2019t Know What This Means Either\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just weeks after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth canceled the deployment of 4,000 military personnel to Poland, U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/rutte-welcomes-trump-poland-uturn-nato-troops\/\">issued<\/a> an about-face on Thursday\u2014leaving NATO allies bewildered by Washington\u2019s flip-flopping commitment to Europe\u2019s security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116614442694237946\">wrote<\/a> on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the U.S. Defense Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/14\/us\/politics\/us-army-poland-troops-hegseth-trump.html\">announced<\/a> that it would be reducing the U.S. military presence in Europe, starting with withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany. Two weeks later, Hegseth also canceled an armored brigade\u2019s planned nine-month rotation to Poland.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2026\/05\/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-and-nato-secretary-general-mark-rutte-after-their-meeting\/\">insisted<\/a> on Friday that these decisions were \u201cnot a punitive thing. It\u2019s just something that\u2019s ongoing.\u201d \u201cEvery country has to constantly reevaluate what their needs are, what their commitments are around the world, and how to properly structure that,\u201d Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2026\/05\/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-remarks-to-press-10\/\">told<\/a> the press.<\/p>\n<p>However, European leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/04\/24\/us-pentagon-email-nato-spain-uk-falkland-islands-iran\/\">found the timing<\/a> of the troop withdrawals suspect; the Pentagon\u2019s initial announcement came shortly after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused the White House of lacking a war strategy in Iran and said that Washington was being \u201chumiliated\u201d by Tehran. Merz made those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/28\/us-humiliated-germany-merz-europe-iran-war-energy-prices-fuel.html\">comments<\/a> on April 27. Two days later, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/116490196510215628\">wrote<\/a> on Truth Social that \u201cThe United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time.\u201d The next day, he wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/116493939901285486\">post<\/a> criticizing Merz. The day after that, the Defense Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/01\/us\/politics\/us-troops-germany.html\">said<\/a> it was pulling troops from Germany.<\/p>\n<p>But while there seemed to be a clear cause-and-effect to explain the withdrawal from Germany, Hegseth\u2019s decision two weeks later to also cancel the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland caught many off guard\u2014including, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/trump-says-poland-will-get-an-extra-5-000-u-s-troops-d71d6d6e?st=mQvt31\">according<\/a> to the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, Trump himself. Now, Trump has apparently reversed course on Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The White House\u2019s decision-making \u201cis confusing indeed and not always easy to navigate,\u201d Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard told reporters on Friday. Even some U.S. defense officials expressed confusion, with one telling <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-trump-troops-europe-poland-confusion-5ee39c29238cdee76c1780233cb6fddc\">The Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cWe just spent the better part of two weeks reacting to the first announcement. We don\u2019t know what this means either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as much as NATO members appear surprised by the United States\u2019 U-turn, they are also relieved. \u201cI thank the President of the United States, Donald Trump, for his friendship toward Poland and for the decisions whose practical impact we see very clearly today,\u201d Polish President Karol Nawrocki <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NawrockiKn\/status\/2057575942927577252?s=20\">wrote<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<p>NATO chief Mark Rutte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yiYv6LvTv5k\">offered<\/a> similar praise on Friday while stressing that Trump\u2019s decision would not change the alliance\u2019s push to make European members less dependent \u201con a single ally, the United States.\u201d Rutte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/22\/trump-troops-poland-nato-rutte-defense-spending.html\">announced<\/a> that NATO would spend hundreds of billions of dollars on defense in the coming years to help reach the alliance\u2019s 5 percent <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/03\/06\/nato-5-percent-defense-spending-trump-russia-ukraine\/\">minimum defense spending<\/a> pledge.<\/p>\n<p>Rutte\u2019s messaging is likely an effort to appease the White House, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/04\/01\/trump-nato-iran-war-paper-tiger-starmer-strait-hormuz\/\">repeatedly criticized<\/a> Europe for not bearing the burden of its own security. \u201cI think there\u2019s a broad recognition that there are going to be eventually less U.S. troops in Europe than there has historically been for a variety of reasons,\u201d Rubio said on Friday. The secretary of state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/22\/marco-rubio-trump-disappointment-with-nato-will-be-discussed-at-summit\">added<\/a> that Trump\u2019s disappointment with Europe would be discussed during NATO\u2019s leaders\u2019 summit in July.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>Today\u2019s Most Read<\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>What We\u2019re Following<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Diversifying exports. <\/strong>Mexico prepared to sign a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international-news\/20260522-mexico-eu-to-lower-tariffs-in-bid-to-grow-non-us-trade\">free-trade agreement<\/a> with the European Union on Friday that aims to reduce both sides\u2019 dependence on the United States. The pact, which expands a preexisting trade deal that only covered industrial products, now includes duty-free access for almost all goods and services, including farm produce and digital trade.<\/p>\n<p>Bilateral trade between Mexico and the EU has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/mexico-eu-sign-stalled-trade-deal-they-aim-diversify-us-2026-05-22\/\">increased<\/a> by 75 percent over the past decade. With Friday\u2019s deal, Mexican officials estimate that annual exports to the EU will increase from around $24 billion to $36 billion by 2030; EU exports to Mexico are worth around $65 billion in goods annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis summit \u200bmeans more than trade; it\u2019s a geopolitical statement,\u201d EU foreign-policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Thursday ahead of the signing. Both Mexico City and Brussels are hoping to diversify their exports away from Washington to counter <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/12\/09\/trump-mexico-tariffs-water-farmers-ranchers-texas\/\">Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs<\/a>. However, the deal\u2014despite being ready to sign a year ago\u2014was heavily delayed due to the EU prioritizing its free-trade agreement with South America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/14\/eu-mercosur-trade-deal-trump-donroe-doctrine\/\">Mercosur bloc<\/a> as well as negotiations with Australia, India, and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calls for multilateralism. <\/strong>Trade envoys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202605\/1361683.shtml\">gathered<\/a> in China on Friday for a two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference focused on bolstering multilateral cooperation, addressing supply chain crises, and improving trade imbalances. Members of APEC account for nearly half of all global trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more turbulent the times, the more we must adhere to seeking common ground while reserving differences, working together to \u200bovercome difficulties, striving to reach more consensus, leading the Asia-Pacific economy through the crisis, and injecting confidence \u2060into the global economy,\u201d Chinese trade representative Li Chenggang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/apec-trade-envoys-gather-china-discuss-trade-imbalances-supply-chain-resilience-2026-05-22\/\">said<\/a> during APEC\u2019s opening ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>But Li\u2019s message was slightly undercut merely by his presence. Li <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/22\/china-apec-trade-meeting-li-chenggang-cooperation-us-china-deals.html\">revealed<\/a> on Friday that he would be chairing the meeting instead of Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who was unable to attend due to \u201curgent official business.\u201d However, one attendee told CNBC that Wang was expected to return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A blow to the CHP. <\/strong>A Turkish appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-21\/turkey-court-unseats-opposition-leader-in-blow-to-erdogan-rivals\">ruled<\/a> on Thursday that the 2023 congress of the Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP)\u2014during which Ozgur Ozel was chosen to be the party\u2019s leader\u2014should be annulled, citing unspecified irregularities. The unprecedented decision stripped the opposition party of its current leadership and reinstated Kemal Kilicdaroglu as its chair.<\/p>\n<p>Ozel is a <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/02\/05\/trump-erdogan-turkey-ozel-imamoglu-democracy\/\">fierce ally<\/a> of imprisoned Istanbul Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/03\/26\/turkey-protests-erdogan-imamoglu-chp-akp-yavas-pkk-bahceli-ocalan-kurds\/\">Ekrem Imamoglu<\/a>, whom experts once viewed as the strongest electoral challenger to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Kilicdaroglu, meanwhile, is considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2023\/04\/14\/turkey-election-kemal-kilicdaroglu-chp-platform-erdogan\/\">divisive leader<\/a> who\u2014after losing to Erdogan in 2023\u2014lacks the support needed to reenergize the CHP. Turkey\u2019s next presidential vote is not until 2028; however, Thursday\u2019s ruling increases the likelihood that Erdogan calls an early election to try for another term.<\/p>\n<p>The CHP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/turkey-political-crisis-simmers-opposition-vows-resist-court-ruling-2026-05-22\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=052226&amp;lctg=607f1056abd4f461f466319b&amp;user_email=6b04284e4d00370f16d3dac0a626e01bf24d86e4d6995646867da6aa680488d0\">denounced<\/a> the ruling as a \u201cjudicial coup\u201d on Friday and vowed to fight it. Experts warned that if the decision was upheld, the courts could have greater influence over party leadership and ultimately sway democratic practices. The state, though, maintains that the judiciary is independent, and Erdogan\u2019s government denies targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/04\/23\/turkey-erdogan-imamoglu-protests-military-democracy-autocracy\/\">political dissidents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>Odds and Ends<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Why did the world\u2019s most fearsome dinosaurs have such tiny arms?
