It&#8217;s not new for popes to speak out on political issues, historians of religion say, but Trump&#8217;s insults toward the pope are without precedent.<\/p>\n<p>The direct nature of Pope Leo&#8217;s responses as well as him being the first American pope are also playing a role in how the exchange is being interpreted by the public.<\/p>\n<p>The recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/06\/nx-s1-5773147\/pope-leo-calls-for-peace-and-an-end-to-world-conflicts-in-first-easter-mass\" target=\"_blank\">back and forth started<\/a> with Leo&#8217;s calling for peace in response to the war in Iran, and continued with him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/11\/g-s1-117150\/pope-leo-us-iran-war-israel-denounce\" target=\"_blank\">warning of the<\/a> &#8220;delusion of omnipotence&#8221; and writing that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Pontifex\/status\/2042588417578668338\" target=\"_blank\">God does not bless any conflict<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/13\/nx-s1-5780996\/pope-leo-begins-tour-across-africa-row-with-trump-iran-war\" target=\"_blank\">escalated this past weekend<\/a> when Trump accused Leo of being &#8220;WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,&#8221; a potential response to Catholic leaders&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/transcripts\/nx-s1-5784841\" target=\"_blank\">calling for more humanity<\/a> in the Trump administration&#8217;s immigration policies. Trump also claimed Leo was in favor of Iran having nuclear weapons. He&#8217;s really pointing out the objective moral law,&#8221; said Michele Dillon, a professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire whose research focuses on the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>But prior interactions were much more diplomatic.<\/p>\n<p>In 1965, Pope Paul VI was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/blogs\/ncr-today\/paul-vi-50-years-ago-no-more-war-war-never-again\" target=\"_blank\">first pope to speak before the United Nations<\/a>, urging an end to the Vietnam War and famously saying, &#8220;No more war, war never again.&#8221; Paul VI pushed President Lyndon Johnson to &#8220;increase even more your noble effort&#8221; to negotiate for peace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/messages\/pont-messages\/documents\/hf_p-vi_mess_19670208_presid-usa.html\" target=\"_blank\">in Vietnam in 1967<\/a>. Later that year, Johnson released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/statement-the-president-following-his-meeting-the-vatican-with-pope-paul-vi\" target=\"_blank\">a cordial statement<\/a> after meeting the pope, saying &#8220;I deeply appreciate the full and free manner&#8221; of the pope&#8217;s opinions.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Pope John Paul II <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/speeches\/1979\/october\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_19791002_general-assembly-onu.html\" target=\"_blank\">spoke before the United Nations<\/a>, focusing on human rights and peace. He advocated an end to conflicts in the Middle East, with a &#8220;just settlement of the Palestinian question&#8221; and the &#8220;territorial integrity of Lebanon.&#8221; John Paul II visited President Jimmy Carter in the White House, where they talked about the Philippines, China, Europe, South Korea, and the Middle East, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/eyewitness\/html.php?section=21\" target=\"_blank\">according to Carter&#8217;s notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>John Paul II, a Polish pope, was also involved in less-public political influence. He supported Polish opposition to the Soviet Union and has been credited with helping to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/cna\/how-st-john-paul-ii-helped-bring-down-the-berlin-wall-35-years-later\" target=\"_blank\">bring down the Berlin Wall<\/a> in 1989. Later, in 2003, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/speeches\/2003\/january\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_20030113_diplomatic-corps.html\" target=\"_blank\">he spoke against the U.S. invasion<\/a> of Iraq and also sent representatives to Washington and Baghdad to make appeals to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2003\/ALLPOLITICS\/03\/05\/sprj.irq.bush.vatican\/\" target=\"_blank\">avoid the war<\/a>. Bush to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/health\/health-july-dec01-stem-cells_07-23#:~:text=Health%20Jul%2023%2C%202001%206,stooped%20over%20in%20his%20chair\" target=\"_blank\">reject stem cell<\/a> research \u2014 but neither president escalated the situation and both remained respectful.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>More recently, in 2013, Pope Francis called an impromptu vigil to plead for peace in the civil war in Syria and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/sep\/05\/pope-g20-syria-peace-talks\" target=\"_blank\">wrote to<\/a> Russian President Vladimir Putin to oppose military intervention there. Francis responded to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/04\/05\/522719915\/after-deadly-attack-in-syria-global-outrage-mounts-and-investigations-continue\" target=\"_blank\">chemical attack<\/a> that left some 70 people dead in Syria in 2017, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/pope-horrified-unacceptable-massacre-syria\" target=\"_blank\">he was &#8220;horrified<\/a>,&#8221; and he appealed &#8220;to the conscience of those who have political responsibility&#8221; to end the violence.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/21\/g-s1-61925\/pope-francis-was-also-a-fierce-advocate-in-the-fight-against-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">released a document<\/a> saying the church accepted the scientific consensus on climate change and urged world leaders to act.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of the world&#8217;s leading climate activists have said that no one has done more to shape public opinion on [climate change] than Pope Francis,&#8221; White said.<\/p>\n<p>Francis was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/22\/g-s1-62064\/pope-francis-gaza-church-palestinian-christians\" target=\"_blank\">a tireless advocate<\/a> for peace in Gaza, and would call Gaza&#8217;s Church of the Holy Family nightly during the war between Hamas and Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Francis also went head to head with Trump in 2016 before Trump&#8217;s first election. When Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/news\/pope-on-trump-person-who-thinks-only-about-building-walls-not-building-bridges-is-not-christian\" target=\"_blank\">visited the U.S.-Mexico border<\/a>, he said a person &#8220;who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.&#8221; Trump called the pope&#8217;s comments &#8220;disgraceful,&#8221; but he quickly smoothed over the situation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pope-francis-calls-donald-trumps-border-wall-not-christian-1455814974\" target=\"_blank\">called Francis<\/a> a &#8220;wonderful guy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\"><strong>Popes have been reluctant to name names before now<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Popes have historically been hesitant to name the person their criticism is directed at outright. A hotly contested example is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/04\/24\/401967360\/pope-and-mussolini-tells-the-secret-history-of-fascism-and-the-church\" target=\"_blank\">Pope Pius XII&#8217;s<\/a> decision to not directly <a href=\"https:\/\/home.olemiss.edu\/~rrychlak\/holy_see_vs_third_reich\/outsideframe.htm\" target=\"_blank\">name and denounce<\/a> Adolf Hitler during World War II.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis also faced criticism for his <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/pope-francis-leaves-a-mixed-legacy-in-wartime-ukraine-overshadowed-by-historic-vatican-moscow-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\">ambiguous references<\/a> to Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>This makes Leo&#8217;s directness all the more relevant, according to White, who is also the author of <em>Pope Leo XIV: Inside the Conclave and the Dawn of a New Papacy<\/em>. Leo referring to Trump by name, though still a rare occurrence, was a &#8220;new tact&#8221; for the papacy, he said.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-overflow-1-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap overflow-1\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s just kind of a reflex on the Vatican&#8217;s behalf to want to be perceived as neutral as possible in a conflict,&#8221; he said. Leo, however, &#8220;appealed to [Trump] directly and in a sense, pointed the finger to say: &#8216;You started this war, you have the power to end this war.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pope does not want to get involved in a political back and forth, said Dillon, the UNH professor, but his job is to preach the Catholic teachings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the last thing any pope wants to do, because they do want to be a pope for the universal church and for all people,&#8221; Dillon said. &#8220;A pope of peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\"><strong>The Trump administration is frequently invoking religion\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another reason for Leo&#8217;s outspokenness may be the Trump administration&#8217;s continued religious rhetoric and imagery, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Trump shared an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpTruthOnX\/status\/2043523798553743595?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">AI-generated image<\/a> that depicts him as a Jesus-like figure, wearing a white robe and red sash and laying his hands on a sick, bedridden man as light appeared to radiate from his hands. The post was later deleted and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/14\/nx-s1-5783807\/after-backlash-trump-deletes-post-depicting-him-as-jesus-like-figure\" target=\"_blank\">Trump claimed<\/a> the image was of him as a doctor.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESNX-S1-5779690-101\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Robert Orsi, a professor of religious studies and history at Northwestern University, said he was alarmed by the post&#8217;s connotations. He called the whole exchange with Leo &#8220;unprecedented,&#8221; and &#8220;never in U.S. history has this happened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/116408742801619405\" target=\"_blank\">shared a post<\/a> on social media with an image of him being embraced by Jesus. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/Fbbmv5B68BI\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters<\/a> last week that he believes God supports the U.S. military action in Iran because &#8220;God is good and God wants to see people taken care of.&#8221; Last year, the White House posted an image of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/1918502592335724809\" target=\"_blank\">Trump as the pope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have an administration, not just a president, but an administration that is speaking out in more overtly religious terms than even somebody like Jimmy Carter,&#8221; said Margaret Thompson, a professor of history and political science at Syracuse University. Carter was an evangelical Christian.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-overflow-2-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap overflow-2\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Dillon, the UNH professor, said that because of this, Leo may have felt a duty to personally reference and respond to Trump&#8217;s attacks, because he recognizes that &#8220;appeasement has a moral price.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesuit priest and author James Martin told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/14\/nx-s1-5783880\/jesuit-priest-shares-how-catholics-are-reacting-to-trumps-criticism-of-pope-leo\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Morning Edition<\/em><\/a> that &#8220;pretty much every Catholic I spoke to, from progressive Catholics to traditional Catholics, were appalled,&#8221; at Trump&#8217;s words toward the pope. &#8220;The pope is, you know, the representative of the whole church.
