Modi was generous with his signature hugs and laughs, and Netanyahu effusive with praise for his &#8220;great friend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESG-S1-116582-100\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Yet three days after their meeting, Israel and the U.S. launched their war on Iran, sending India&#8217;s currency and stock market tumbling. Instagram user Namaskaar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWWQgrACKrf\/\" target=\"_blank\">reworked<\/a> a popular hymn to appeal to Modi to use his friendship with Netanyahu to resolve India&#8217;s fuel crunch. Comedian Pulkit Mani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWJEALniUcc\/\" target=\"_blank\">performed<\/a> a sharp mimicry of Modi&#8217;s exuberance and awkward hugs while meeting world leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Indian censors are also watching.<\/p>\n<p>Several accounts and posts, including those of Acharya and Mani, were <a href=\"https:\/\/sochmuch.prateekwaghre.com\/pages\/Blocked+Tweets\" target=\"_blank\">withheld <\/a>in India. In emails shared by dozens of users, host platforms X and Meta claimed they were doing this as per legal requests by Indian authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The blocked accounts include those belonging to popular independent journalists and satirists with hundreds of thousands of followers, and even one legislator from the opposition Trinamool Congress party.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really stuff that&#8217;s critical of the government,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/techglobalinstitute.com\/members\/prateek-waghre\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prateek Waghre<\/a>, an internet policy researcher with Tech Global Institute. A three-hour takedown deadline leaves it open to misuse, he says. And while users can challenge the orders in Indian high courts, &#8220;the chances of you being able to get a court reprieve to even the most perverse order in a matter of three hours is 0.00%,&#8221; he adds.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what happened to Prateek Sharma, who runs the satirical account <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrNimoYadav\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Nimo Yadav<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<p>In March, X emailed him in the middle of the night, saying the Indian authorities had asked the platform to block his account. When the high court heard his challenge days later, a government counsel defended the government&#8217;s request, saying the posts portrayed Modi in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livelaw.in\/high-court\/delhi-high-court\/x-account-blocked-meity-order-defaming-pm-modi-dr-nimo-yadav-528341\" target=\"_blank\">bad taste<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like when Sharma wrote, &#8220;Elect a clown, expect a circus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the Delhi High Court directed X to reinstate his account, while keeping the specific posts cited in the initial order blocked.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES2024357804367368215\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP TWITTER LARGE GRAPHIC\" ARIA-LABEL=\"TWEET\" --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">The mirage of Modi<\/h3>\n<p>Analysts say this burst of irreverence toward Modi is, in part, a reaction to the relentless mythmaking by his supporters over the 12 years since he first came to power.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel that the current generation of 22-to-25-year-olds don&#8217;t relate to him,&#8221; says Sunil Sharma, a popular satirist known by his pseudonym, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RoflGandhi_\" target=\"_blank\">Rofl Gandhi<\/a>, who has also had more than a dozen of his posts withheld in India. &#8220;People are now realizing that this myth of having a big aura in foreign lands was just largely media creation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Modi&#8217;s ubiquity in India, analysts say, has also become his Achilles&#8217; heel. For years, his team has frequently placed him at the center of India&#8217;s success stories in sports, science and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESG-S1-116582-105\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People feel they can direct their frustration at the man who claims credit for everything that has gone right in their lives,&#8221; says Kapil Komireddi, author of the book <em>Malevolent Republic: A Short History of the New India<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Godi_media\" target=\"_blank\">Godi media<\/a>&#8221; \u2014 a popular shorthand for outlets seen as uncritically aligned with the government \u2014 has become a defining feature of India&#8217;s media landscape. This includes major television networks, some owned by powerful billionaires and others influenced by state pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Some satirists have begun targeting these pliant broadcasters as well. YouTuber Purav Jha, for instance, transformed the Bollywood hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3547616\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>All Is Well<\/em><\/a> into a parody titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5pNLh11iTBM\" target=\"_blank\">All Izz Hell<\/a>.&#8221; Set to an upbeat tune, it features lines such as &#8220;Corruption is out of control, literacy is in shambles, news channels are a farce, influencers are, instead, doing real journalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"resg-s1-116582-106\" class=\"bucketwrap video youtube-video large\">\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"5pNLh11iTBM\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ALL IZZ HELL | Purav Jha\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5pNLh11iTBM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>                <b class=\"credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    <b class=\"source\">YouTube<\/b><br \/>\n                <\/b>\n        <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the years, many critics and satirists have been arrested, dragged into lengthy court cases or doxxed online. Some have even received death threats.
