He says people called them \u201cwickies,\u201d because in the early days, lighthouse keepers relied on oil lamps to produce a sustainable glow, requiring them to routinely trim the lamps\u2019 wicks.<\/p>\n<p>But Barton and Gach aren\u2019t that old. By the time the Coast Guard posted them at the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, it was more a flick of the switch. The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lighthousefriends.com\/light.asp?ID=234\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>structure was electrified<\/u><\/a> in the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Barton says between duties like light maintenance, weather monitoring and night shifts, the role was serious and deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always had a routine. If you weren\u2019t fixing this, you were checking that,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can\u2019t make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Gach says his posting had creature comforts that his much earlier predecessors could have never dreamed of, like a small color television, there was one major downside: the foghorn. You start to fall asleep, there it is again,\u201d Gach says. \u201cIt was tough, but it had to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a real sense of responsibility \u2014 mariners and boaters still relied on them, after all.<\/p>\n<p>Neither foresaw their positions eventually becoming obsolete, but Barton and Gach were among the last generations to man lighthouses. Chicago Harbor\u2019s signal was automated in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>As navigational technology continued to progress, the singular role of the lighthouse shifted, and the accompanying stations that humans once sustained became redundant. But many of these structures still exist, in varying forms, both as ongoing aids to navigation and as maritime legacies preserved for historical value.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Historical significance to crumbling structures<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Nationwide, a little more than half of the 1,500 lighthouses originally constructed remain, according to Jeff Gales of the nonprofit <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/uslhs.org\/about\/Staff-and-Volunteers\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>United States Lighthouse Society<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a very long time, the Coast Guard was lessening the role of human beings at lighthouses because modern technology was taking over,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd, you know, they don\u2019t want to waste money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although historically, keepers were necessary to illuminate lighthouses, by the 1960s and \u201870s, automation had largely spread across the country. As stations became unmanned, physical conditions often deteriorated and some were decommissioned.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Gales says today, the Coast Guard maintains many of the actual light signals for safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a tangible, visible, physical lighthouse that you can reference is still very important,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019re definitely something that are used by mariners and \u2026 technically could be a back-up if a system fails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/lighthouse\/il.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>Waukegan Harbor Lighthouse<\/u><\/a> just north of Chicago, for example, is still an active aid to navigation. But all that remains is an <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lighthousefriends.com\/light.asp?ID=238\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>unadorned 35-foot cast-iron cylinder<\/u><\/a> with a green flash atop.<\/p>\n<p>Further down the coast, in contrast, is the photogenic 153-year-old Grosse Point Lighthouse in Evanston. The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grossepointlighthouse.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>facility\u2019s museum<\/u><\/a>, open during the weekends in the summer months, helps explain the direct role that lighthouses played in facilitating local growth and development.<\/p>\n<p>Terras says it can be hard to picture today, but in the latter half of the 19th century, the area\u2019s lakefront teemed with commercial maritime traffic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring many years in the 1800s, Chicago surpassed New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, all the major seaports, in arrivals and departures,\u201d he says. \u201cChicago\u2019s port, of course, because of winter, was only eight months long. In 1917, officials decided to move it to its current location.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard operates the actual light as an active aid to navigation, but the station is in a state of disrepair. According to an <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/news\/2019\/12\/8\/20976289\/chicago-harbor-lighthouse-redevelopment-david-morton-scott-gidwitz-theaster-gates-lake-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>assessment report<\/u><\/a>, it\u2019s rusted, crumbling and gutted.<\/p>\n<p>Lentsch, a longtime recreational boater, was spurred to action in 2022 amid worries that the property could be put up for <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2020\/11\/1\/21542197\/lighthouse-lake-michigan-chicago-ownership-feds-want-it-back-national-park-service-gsa\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>auction<\/u><\/a>, potentially ending up in private hands.<\/p>\n<p>He was determined to keep the historic landmark public. His volunteer organization is awaiting final approval to take over the property from the city of Chicago to repurpose it as an accessible visitor center. The group envisions it as an extension of the nearby Loop\u2019s Museum Campus \u2014 a tourist attraction with a major focus on local education.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" lighthouse perspective, from engineering, to weather, to water sampling,\u201d Lentsch says.<\/p>\n<p>The pending stewardship change is possible through the federal government\u2019s<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/orgs\/1220\/national-historic-lighthouse-preservation-act-nhlpa.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u> National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000<\/u><\/a>, which has allowed local entities and nonprofits to commit to saving outdated light stations across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Lentsch says helping the public better understand the area\u2019s rich maritime heritage is a major reason why people want to save these beacons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such an iconic part of the skyline,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s been there
