Last month, Johnson talked about an executive order aiming to create new ways to hold U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents accountable for alleged wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe state\u2019s attorney has made it clear she would prosecute criminal behavior if there was evidence brought to her,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cSo now there is a clear directive that I\u2019ve provided to my police department to ensure that evidence is not just collected, but it\u2019s preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amy in the Jefferson Park neighborhood was worried Johnson\u2019s rhetoric would encourage the Trump administration to send ICE agents back to Chicago. Johnson responded by saying, \u201cThis is everything about what this president is determined to do, which is undermine our democracy. …This is not a challenge to the president; this is a challenge to us as people who define this country through a very fundamental value, the ability to have free and fair elections and to be able to have communities and cities that are safe and vibrant. We should not be afraid of our own government.\u201d<\/p>\n
