Just one day after the U.S.-Israel war against Iran began, Trump told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national-security\/2026\/03\/trump-iran-attack-negotiations\/686201\/\"><em>Atlantic<\/em><\/a> that \u201cThey [Iran] want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them.\u201d Since then, White House officials have repeatedly claimed that the conflict is not about <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/03\/iran-war-us-foreign-intervention-colin-powell-pottery-barn-rule\/\">regime change<\/a>, even as Trump continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/wants-iran-leadership-structure-gone-preference-good-leader-rcna262039\">make statements<\/a> to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s unwillingness to negotiate clashes with the hopes of other foreign leaders. According to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, several countries have offered to mediate peace talks. Although Pezeshkian did not specify which nations have reached out, Egypt, Oman, Qatar, and Turkey have reportedly all offered to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/06\/new-supreme-leader-anti-iran-us-propaganda-reformists\">broker negotiations<\/a> since the war erupted on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation could spiral beyond anyone\u2019s control,\u201d United Nations chief Ant\u00f3nio Guterres <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/2029970545828053362\">wrote<\/a> on X on Friday. \u201cIt is time to stop the fighting and get to serious diplomatic negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Tehran also appears unlikely to come to the table. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/iran-foreign-minister-interview-rcna261920?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma&amp;taid=69a9b7760a22950001b0de47&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\">NBC News<\/a> on Thursday that Tehran refuses to negotiate with Washington. \u201cThe fact is that we don\u2019t have any positive experience of negotiating with the United States, you know, especially with this administration,\u201d Araghchi said. \u201cWe negotiated twice, last year and this year, and then in the middle of negotiations, they attacked us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pezeshkian echoed those concerns on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/drpezeshkian\/status\/2029877231942590545\">writing<\/a>, \u201cMediation should address those who underestimated the Iranian people and ignited this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the while, fighting continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/02\/iran-israel-us-trump-war-air-defense-missiles-drones\/\">wreak havoc<\/a> on the Middle East. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned late Thursday that firepower over Iran was about to \u201csurge dramatically.\u201d And on Friday, Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/trump-urges-iranian-kurds-attack-iran-war-widens-2026-03-06\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=030626&amp;lctg=607f1056abd4f461f466319b\">intensified<\/a> its military campaigns in Lebanon and Iran, carrying out heavy bombardments against <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/06\/hezbollah-lebanon-war-iran-trump-israel\/\">Hezbollah targets<\/a> in Beirut as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/trump-urges-iranian-kurds-attack-iran-war-widens-2026-03-06\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=030626&amp;lctg=607f1056abd4f461f466319b\">destruction<\/a> of a sprawling underground bunker designed for Iran\u2019s slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n<p>The escalating conflict has finally stirred oil markets after a week of <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/05\/oil-gas-markets-reaction-iran-war-hormuz-insurance\/\">relative complacency<\/a>. On Friday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/energy\">benchmark price<\/a> of crude oil rose 8 percent to more than $92 a barrel in London, with an even bigger 12 percent rise, reaching $90 in Washington. Gasoline and diesel prices around the world\u2014but <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">especially<\/a> in the United States\u2014followed suit, and other refined products, such as jet fuel, spiked even faster.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Friday, the Trump administration released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d1d68d91-0d2c-4682-9204-01320a9320d4\">first details<\/a> of its plan to have the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC) offer a backstop for maritime insurance to coax tankers back into the <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/06\/iran-war-oil-gas-ammunition-shortage\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, where almost no ships are moving due to <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/03\/iran-strikes-hormuz-shipping-oil-2\/\">sky-high insurance rates<\/a> and the threat of being attacked by <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/03\/05\/iran-drone-missiles-middle-east-united-states-israel-war\/\">Iranian drones and missiles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the U.S. reinsurance plan, starting at $20 billion worth of coverage for select elements of certain ships, is likely inadequate to address the financial challenge of providing cover for the stalled maritime fleet. Finland joined NATO in 2023 following Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/02\/23\/russia-ukraine-war-nato-europe-poland-baltic-states-finland-putin-military\/\">full-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/a> the year before. It shares a more than <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2024\/02\/09\/ivalo-nato-finland-border-russia\/\">830-mile border<\/a> with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Although amending Helsinki\u2019s 1987 Nuclear Energy Act still requires approval from parliament, the proposal has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russia-says-it-will-respond-if-finland-hosts-nuclear-weapons-accuses-helsinki-2026-03-06\/\">sparked outrage<\/a> from Moscow, which warned on Friday that such action exacerbates tensions in Europe. \u201cThe fact is that by deploying \u2060nuclear weapons on its territory, Finland is beginning to threaten us,\u201d Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. \u201cAnd if Finland threatens us, we take appropriate measures.\u201d He did not specify what those measures might be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big wins for Gen Z. <\/strong>Initial results in Nepal\u2019s parliamentary elections showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/world-news\/nepal-election-results-2026-live-updates-counting-results-2082-bs-winner-list-5th-march-2026-latest-news-101772757998173.html\">sweeping gains<\/a> on Friday for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), the party of rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah.
