Agents from ICE&#8217;s Homeland Security Investigations unit will also be present at the Games, sparking outrage from some Italian politicians.<br \/>\n                <b class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    Piero Cruciatti\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                <\/b><br \/>\n                <b class=\"hide-caption\"><b>hide caption<\/b><\/b>\n            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>            <b class=\"toggle-caption\"><b>toggle caption<\/b><\/b>\n    <\/div>\n<p>    <span class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>        Piero Cruciatti\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>    <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A growing number of Italian politicians are pushing back against a plan for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to help provide security at the Milan Winter Olympics.  <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Homeland Security officials have provided assistance at past Olympic Games, but critics including Milan&#8217;s mayor say after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/series\/g-s1-107333\/minneapolis-shootings-protests\" target=\"_blank\">violence in Minneapolis<\/a>, ICE agents are no longer welcome.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a militia that kills, a militia that enters into the homes of people, signing their own permission slips,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-milan-cortina-olympics-immigration-enforcement-us-110fa4b2066e1fb920dba2a71c3a89e0\" target=\"_blank\">Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala<\/a> told local media. &#8220;It is clear they are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>It&#8217;s common for U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, to play a role at big international events like the Olympics. <\/p>\n<p>In a statement to NPR, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said ICE&#8217;s Homeland Security Investigations unit will assist Italian authorities and other U.S. federal agencies working at the Winter Games.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously, ICE does not conduct immigration enforcement operations in foreign countries,&#8221; McLaughlin said. &#8220;At the Olympics, ICE&#8217;s Homeland Security Investigations is supporting the U.S. Department of State&#8217;s Diplomatic Security Service and host nation to vet and mitigate risks from transnational criminal organizations. All security operations remain under Italian authority.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Speaking with Italian journalists, Italy&#8217;s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, said it&#8217;s not yet clear what U.S. security personnel will be at the Milan Cortina Games, but he stressed that &#8220;ICE will not operate on Italian territory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"edTag\">\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like the SS are about to arrive.&#8221; &#8211; Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, speaking with <em>L&#8217;Espresso<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s foreign minister Antonio Tajani, meanwhile, scrambled to contain the controversy, saying that the ICE agents operating in Italy are not comparable to immigration enforcement squads. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like these are the [ICE] people on the streets of Minneapolis,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/lespresso.it\/c\/politica\/2026\/1\/27\/ice-italia-olimpiadi-tajani-ss-bonelli-gestapo-volto-coperto\/59491\" target=\"_blank\">Tajani told the Italian magazine <em>L&#8217;Espresso<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>adding, &#8220;It&#8217;s not like the SS are about to arrive.&#8221; <\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Those reassurances haven&#8217;t satisfied many Italian politicians. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GiuseppeConteIT\/status\/2016094309360022008\" target=\"_blank\">Posting on X<\/a>, former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte pointed to &#8220;street violence and killings&#8221; in the U.S. linked to ICE.
