Amid <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/20\/trump-greenland-tariffs-text-messages-world-economic-forum-davos-macron\/\">escalating tensions<\/a> over Trump\u2019s desire for the United States to take ownership of Greenland, the U.S. president <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/21\/trump-davos-speech-transcript-greenland-nato-denmark-use-force\/\">said<\/a> that while he views the semi-autonomous Danish territory as necessary for U.S. security and called for immediate negotiations to acquire it, he would not attempt to seize it by force.<\/p>\n<p>Trump outlined his vision to use Greenland as part of a \u201cGolden Dome\u201d of protection that he aims to construct around the United States and Canada and insisted that \u201cno nation or a group of nations is in any position to be able to secure Greenland other than the United States.\u201d He repeated his <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/21\/davos-greenland-trump-carney-speeches\/\">claim<\/a> that he has done more for NATO than any other U.S. president, saying the alliance wouldn\u2019t exist if he didn\u2019t \u201cget involved\u201d during his first term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll we\u2019re asking for is to get Greenland, including right, title, and ownership, because you need the ownership to defend it,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019ve never asked for anything. It\u2019s always a one-way street,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, European leaders appeared to be <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/21\/trump-greenland-eu-nato-response-france-germany-denmark\/\">moving quickly<\/a> to demonstrate resolve and solidarity with Denmark\u2019s resistance to Trump\u2019s threats, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-bazooka-trade-us-greenland-france-threat-nato\/\">exploring<\/a> the potential use of the European Union\u2019s emergency Anti-Coercion Instrument\u2014nicknamed the \u201ctrade bazooka\u201d\u2014to sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cd0ydjvxpejo\">military personnel<\/a> to Greenland. On Wednesday, the European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/european-parliament-suspends-work-eu-us-trade-deal-after-trumps-repeated-2026-01-21\/\">suspended<\/a> progress on a trade deal reached between Brussels and Washington last summer, citing Trump\u2019s announcement on Saturday that he would impose additional tariffs on Denmark and seven other NATO countries if they refused to allow the United States to buy Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a surprise development late Wednesday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/115934734335579278\">posted<\/a> on Truth Social that he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte \u201chave formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region\u201d that \u201cif consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress,\u201d Trump wrote, adding that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff would be among the officials involved in those talks.<\/p>\n<p>Though Trump has seemingly taken the use of U.S. military force off the table in his quest for Greenland, the U.S. Congress has avoided taking significant steps to constrain the possibility in the future. FP\u2019s Rachel Oswald <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/21\/congress-greenland-defense-spending-bill-trump-nato-military\/\">reports<\/a> that the text of the final package of Congress\u2019s fiscal 2026 spending bills, released Tuesday, does not prohibit the use of federal funds to attack a NATO ally\u2014indeed, it does not even mention NATO or Greenland at all, though the defense spending measure\u2019s accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/billsthisweek\/20260119\/DEF%20LHHS%20HS%20THUD%20-%20JES%20-%20Division%20A%20-%20Defense%20-%201-19-2026%20-%20Reduced%20File%20Size.pdf\">joint explanatory statement<\/a> does reaffirm \u201cironclad\u201d congressional support for the alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Trump\u2019s speech reinforced the seriousness of his ambitions to acquire Greenland. \u201c[W]e want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won\u2019t give it,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey have a choice. You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative, or you can say no, and we will remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>Today\u2019s Most Read<\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>What We\u2019re Following<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>A fragile cease-fire. <\/strong>On Tuesday, a four-day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/kurdish-rudaw-website-reports-around-1500-islamic-state-members-escaped-syrias-2026-01-19\/\">cease-fire<\/a> took effect between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government after government forces made significant territorial gains in the country\u2019s northeast over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The cease-fire is intended to facilitate negotiations on integrating Kurdish-controlled areas and forces into the Syrian state\u2014a central goal of President Ahmed al-Sharaa\u2019s interim government since the fall of Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime in December 2024. Under the terms of the cease-fire agreement, Damascus has said that its troops will not enter the cities of Hasakah or Qamishli while a plan is discussed. However, reports of violence continued on Wednesday, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/syria-accuses-kurds-breaking-truce-threat-chances-deal-2026-01-21\/\">claims<\/a> from Damascus that an SDF drone strike killed seven of its soldiers\u2014threatening the prospects for a longer-term agreement between the two sides. (The SDF has denied responsibility for the strike.)<\/p>\n<p>Detention camps holding thousands of prisoners linked to the Islamic State also pose major security concerns as control transitions from the SDF to the Syrian government. Both sides have traded accusations over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/20\/middleeast\/syria-isis-fugitives-prison-break-intl\">escape<\/a> of around 120 detainees from Shaddadi prison on Monday; Syrian forces have since taken control of the al-Hol detention camp after the SDF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/middle-east\/isis-us-allies-syria-terrorism-al-hol-sdf-sharaa-rcna254930\">withdrew<\/a>. On Wednesday, U.S. forces transferred 150 detainees from a detention facility in Hasakah to a secure location in Iraq as part of a broader mission to transport up to 7,000 prisoners, according to the U.S. Central Command.<\/p>\n<p>The SDF has been Washington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/RL33487\">principal partner<\/a> for combating the Islamic State since 2015, but Tom Barrack\u2014the U.S. special envoy for Syria\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USAMBTurkiye\/status\/2013635851570336016\">said<\/a> Tuesday that the SDF\u2019s role as the primary anti-Islamic State force has \u201clargely expired.\u201d Barrack expressed U.S. support for the integration of Kurdish forces and communities into a unified Syrian state, warning that prolonged separation could fuel an Islamic State resurgence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil crackdown. <\/strong>U.S. military forces seized yet another oil tanker with ties to Venezuela on Tuesday, marking the seventh time that the United States has done so since such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/u-s-seized-oil-tanker-off-the-coast-of-venezuela-trump-says\/\">operations began in December<\/a>. The Trump administration has said it has been targeting oil tankers that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/20\/us-military-seizes-oil-tanker-venezuela\">under U.S. sanctions<\/a> or are operating as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/15\/us\/politics\/oil-tanker-seized-venezuela.html\">part<\/a> of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/trump-oil-tankers-venezuela.html\">shadow fleet<\/a> to transport oil from sanctioned producers <u>such as<\/u> Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apprehension of another tanker operating in defiance of President Trump\u2019s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean demonstrates our resolve to ensure that the only oil leaving Venezuela will be oil that is coordinated properly and lawfully,\u201d U.S. Southern Command said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Southcom\/status\/2013718812424630376?s=20\">post<\/a> on X, adding that the apprehension occurred \u201cwithout incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This tanker seizure represents the latest move in the White House\u2019s campaign to take control of Venezuela\u2019s oil industry, an effort that has only intensified since the Trump administration ousted Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-oil-tanker-us-military-trump-086d42db3d56f0e952014f97fa30faaf\">earlier this month<\/a>.<em>\u2014Christina Lu <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another sentencing in Seoul. <\/strong>Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was <a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/news\/2026-01-21\/national\/politics\/Former-Prime-Minister-Han-sentenced-to-23-years-for-aiding-Yoons-Dec-3-insurrection\/2505449\">sentenced<\/a> on Wednesday to 23 years in prison for playing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/21\/world\/asia\/south-korea-prime-minister-martial-law.html\">key role<\/a> in former President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s imposition of martial law in December 2024. The Seoul Central District Court found Han guilty of engaging in an insurrection that \u201ccould have pushed South Korea back into dictatorship,\u201d according to presiding judge Lee Jin-kwan.<\/p>\n<p>Han became acting president after Yoon was impeached by South Korea\u2019s National Assembly. Han was then briefly suspended and later reinstated during a Constitutional Court investigation that found no evidence against him. He later failed to secure the presidential nomination from Yoon\u2019s People Power Party ahead of the June 2025 presidential election. In November, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/article\/10636419\">special counsel<\/a> appointed to investigate Yoon\u2019s declaration of martial law brought charges against Han.<\/p>\n<p>Han is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/21\/s-koreas-former-pm-found-guilty-of-insurrection-given-23-years-in\">first official<\/a> to be convicted on charges directly related to Yoon\u2019s martial law decree, and he received a sentence eight years longer than the 15 years sought by prosecutors.
