30px)\" class=\"img\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"\/>\n        <\/picture>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"caption-wrap\">\n<div class=\"caption\" aria-label=\"Image caption\">\n<p>\n                Vehicles in Tehran on Jan. 4 drive past banners at Felestin (Palestine) Square with anti-U.S. and anti-Israel messages and portraits of Iranian armed forces commanders and nuclear scientists who were killed last June in Israeli strikes.<br \/>\n                <b class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    Vahid Salemi\/AP<\/p>\n<p>                <\/b><br \/>\n                <b class=\"hide-caption\"><b>hide caption<\/b><\/b>\n            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>            <b class=\"toggle-caption\"><b>toggle caption<\/b><\/b>\n    <\/div>\n<p>    <span class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>        Vahid Salemi\/AP<\/p>\n<p>    <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>RAMALLAH, West Bank \u2014 As the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/12\/g-s1-105652\/trump-military-action-iran-protests-deaths\" target=\"_blank\">weighs<\/a> a potential military intervention in Iran amid massive protests across the country, political leaders in the region are closely monitoring the course of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/12\/nx-s1-5675284\/even-amid-violent-crackdowns-irans-protests-continue\" target=\"_blank\">demonstrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Israel \u2014 whose existence Iran has long vehemently, ideologically opposed \u2014 there is broad support for the protesters among defense and political officials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From Israel&#8217;s perspective, regime destabilization, regime change, has been the goal for a long time,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisisgroup.org\/who-we-are\/people\/mairav-zonszein\" target=\"_blank\">says Mairav Zonszein<\/a>, a senior analyst for Israel at the International Crisis Group.<\/p>\n<p>In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, though, Palestinians say they hope the regime stays in place and protests die down soon.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;Who else has been able to fight Israel?&#8221; says Abu Akram, a driver who ferries goods from Jordan to the West Bank. &#8220;It has been Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah,&#8221; he said, referring to the Iranian-funded militant group.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition to Israel&#8217;s existence and support for a Palestinian state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounders\/what-hezbollah\" target=\"_blank\">are core tenets<\/a> of Hezbollah. It was once a powerful, non-state actor in the Middle East, but its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/16\/nx-s1-5193281\/israels-escalating-attack-on-lebanon-is-destroying-entire-communities\" target=\"_blank\">fighting capabilities<\/a> have been substantially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/12\/22\/nx-s1-5233830\/hezbollah-contends-with-rising-resentment-in-lebanon\" target=\"_blank\">depleted<\/a> after a recent war with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>With protests in their third week in Iran, human rights groups estimate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/13\/g-s1-105832\/iran-first-calls-outside-world\" target=\"_blank\">at least 646 people<\/a> have been killed in escalating demonstrations so far, though a near-total communications blackout has made verifying casualties extremely difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Israel&#8217;s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/12\/29\/nx-s1-5660759\/trump-and-netanyahu-discussed-peace-deal-iran-and-more-in-meeting\" target=\"_blank\"> <u>met with<\/u><\/a> President Trump at Trump&#8217;s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where Trump warned of potentially more U.S. airstrikes on Iran. This week, Trump told reporters, &#8220;We are looking at it very seriously; the military is looking at it, and we&#8217;re looking at some very strong options.&#8221; On Tuesday, he posted a message on Truth Social addressed to Iranian protesters, saying, &#8220;HELP IS ON ITS WAY.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Iran and Israel also traded missiles during their 12-day conflict last June, pounding cities in both countries and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-israel-war-nuclear-06-30-2025-db2a5537b2d19813b7054f00b006827a\" target=\"_blank\">killing 436<\/a> civilians in Iran and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/these-are-the-28-victims-killed-in-iranian-missile-attacks-during-the-12-day-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\">28 civilians<\/a> in Israel.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;On all fronts \u2014 Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank \u2014 the only front on which there was less of a restraining approach was Iran,&#8221; at the Mar-a-Lago meeting, says <a href=\"https:\/\/israelpolicyforum.org\/about\/staff\/nimrod-novik\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nimrod Novik<\/a>, a fellow with the Israel Policy Forum who served as a senior policy adviser to former Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/parallels\/2016\/09\/27\/464330504\/shimon-peres-the-last-of-israels-founding-fathers-dies-at-93\" target=\"_blank\">Shimon Peres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu is reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/netanyahu-plans-brief-trump-possible-new-iran-strikes-rcna250112\" target=\"_blank\">considering<\/a> another round of strikes on Iran over concerns Tehran is rebuilding its nuclear sites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Israel] does see the combination of this last operation in June, plus the economic hardships in Iran and now these protests as successful, meaning maximum pressure, military pressure, it works,&#8221; says Zonszein. But she also notes Israel&#8217;s military has been holding back, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/idf-says-its-on-alert-for-surprise-scenarios-as-us-mulls-military-strikes-on-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\">waiting to see<\/a> what the U.S. does \u2014 or does not \u2014 do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A military strike is not going to just get rid of the regime,&#8221; says Zonszein. &#8220;And that even if you do take out [Iran&#8217;s supreme leader Ali] Khamenei <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/05\/nx-s1-5666331\/trump-politics-venezuela-republicans-democrats\" target=\"_blank\">in a Venezuelan model<\/a> of some kind, what replaces that? It could be worse. It could be chaotic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Should the current regime in Iran fall, many Palestinians say they are pessimistic any government that replaces it will be beneficial for their hopes for a Palestinian state one day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any government that comes after [in Iran] will be against us,&#8221; says Ibrahim Issa, a shop manager in Ramallah. &#8220;It will be worse [government] than the one before if it is installed by the U.S.A.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Michele Kelemen contributed reporting from Tel Aviv.
