The poll, which was conducted on Jan. 4 and 5 and surveyed more than 1,200 adults nationwide, offers an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/sites\/default\/files\/ct\/news\/documents\/2026-01\/Reuters%20Ipsos%20Venezuela%20Maduro%20Capture%20Survey%20January%204-5%202026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illuminating look<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into how the American public views the controversial military operation that has come to dominate much of the world\u2019s attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World leaders, it turns out, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/01\/03\/us-venezuela-attack-maduro-capture-trump-global-reactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aren\u2019t the only ones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with mixed reactions to the U.S. attack. The poll\u2019s findings suggest that the American public also harbors a wide range of views, with no one reaction clearly on top. What is clear, however, is a wariness that the White House will become too deeply mired in Venezuela\u2019s domestic affairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey don\u2019t want to get too involved. They don\u2019t want U.S. troops in Venezuela,\u201d said Alec Tyson, a lead pollster and senior vice president at Ipsos Public Affairs, which conducted the polling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat presents really a narrow path here for the administration, where Americans are open to\u2014or perhaps hoping for\u2014some positive outcomes, but they\u2019re very cautious about getting too involved,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That challenge is reflected in the data: 33 percent of the survey\u2019s respondents approved of the U.S. military action, almost evenly matching the 34 percent of respondents who disapproved. There\u2019s also a deep sense of uncertainty; 32 percent of people said they were not sure how to feel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" title=\"US -Venezuela 0126\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/dcc55546-a3e1-4152-9d6a-43fb3d4a7a02?src=embed&amp;embed_type=responsive_iframe\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public sentiment is even more sharply fractured along partisan lines. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans, for example, backed Trump\u2019s operation. The same amount of Democrats opposed it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poll suggests that there is slight optimism that the White House\u2019s ousting of Venezuelan strongman Nicol\u00e1s Maduro will potentially benefit that country\u2019s stability, quality of life, and fairness of elections. Yet these sentiments, too, were divided along partisan lines; while Republicans were largely bullish about the military operation\u2019s impacts, Democrats were far more dubious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And across the board, the bigger fear appears to be whether the Trump administration\u2019s operation will more permanently entangle the United States in Venezuelan affairs, alongside concerns about resulting financial costs and risks to the lives of U.S. military personnel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly three-quarters of respondents expressed worries that the United States would get \u201ctoo involved\u201d in Venezuelan affairs. That sentiment is shared by 90 percent of Democratic and more than half of Republican respondents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear that the public wants limited\u2014and I really emphasize limited\u2014engagement there,\u201d Tyson said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- fp_choose_placement_related_posts --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sentiments captured in this Reuters\/Ipsos survey largely echo the findings of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/interactive\/2026\/venezuela-maduro-poll-trump-military\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also found that Americans are almost evenly split on their reactions to the military operation. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported that 40 percent of respondents approved of the attack, compared with 42 percent who disapproved and 18 percent who were unsure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That survey also suggested that Americans broadly would not support any U.S. efforts to take control of Venezuela, as Trump has previously suggested doing: 45 percent of respondents said they would oppose such an action, while 30 percent said they weren\u2019t sure.
