And despite its fortified history, it has fallen victim to multiple high-profile security breaches, including the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa.

On a Monday morning that August, Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman who had briefly worked at the Louvre, donned his old uniform, walked into the museum and, when the coast was clear, took the painting right off the wall. He slipped it out of its frame in a nearby stairwell and carried it out of the building underneath his smock.

At this time, the Mona Lisa was not widely known outside the art world. And because the museum was in the practice of briefly taking paintings off the walls to photograph them, the Mona Lisa‘s disappearance went unnoticed for a whopping 28 hours — at which point it quickly became international news.

        <picture><source srcset="https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/400/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 400w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/600/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 600w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/800/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 800w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/900/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 900w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/1200/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 1200w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/1600/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 1600w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/1800/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg 1800w" data-template="https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2989x3480+0+0/resize/{width}/quality/{quality}/format/{format}/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F28%2F9f%2Fbfdf83f8463b87eb4b43b7a43598%2Fgettyimages-80912833.jpg" sizes="(min-width: 1025px) 650px, calc(100vw - href="https://www.npr.org/2025/01/28/nx-s1-5276917/louvre-renovation-mona-lisa-paris" target="_blank">extensive renovation plans for the museum, which are expected to cost as much as $834 million and take nearly a decade to complete.

Among other changes, the project would establish a dedicated room for the Mona Lisa, create a new “grand entrance” to relieve congestion and upgrade the building’s security system.

Louvre staff — including gallery attendants, ticket agents and security personnel — say those upgrades can’t come soon enough.

In June, the museum shut down for part of a day after staff spontaneously went on strike to protest “unmanageable crowds, chronic understaffing and what one union called ‘untenable’ working conditions,” the Associated Press reported.

Those vulnerabilities are top of mind in the wake of Sunday’s heist, as other cultural institutions tighten security and French officials take the blame.

“What is certain is that we have failed, since people were able to park a furniture hoist in the middle of Paris, get people up it in several minutes to grab priceless jewels,” Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin told France Inter radio on Monday.

<br
