{"id":2705,"date":"2025-10-17T11:01:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T11:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=2705"},"modified":"2025-10-17T11:01:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T11:01:16","slug":"fewer-international-students-are-studying-at-some-illinois-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=2705","title":{"rendered":"Fewer international students are studying at some Illinois universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Fewer international students are heading to universities in Illinois and across the country this fall, early data show, amid efforts by the Trump administration to cut down on the number of foreign students studying on American campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Data from at least three schools \u2014 DePaul, the University of Illinois Chicago and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign \u2014 show declines in international enrollment among graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting drops in tuition revenue are squeezing universities\u2019 finances, and faculty say fewer international students on campus will hurt teaching and research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch of the work that academics and particularly scientists do is international,\u201d said Northwestern University Professor Leslie Harris. \u201cIt\u2019s without borders, because we\u2019re all struggling with the same things: hunger, medical care, global warming. But DePaul University in Lincoln Park has been hit especially hard. About 750 fewer international students are attending class there, according to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/offices.depaul.edu\/president\/notes-from-rob\/2025-2026\/Pages\/enrollment-and-budget-update-09302025.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>a recent message<\/u><\/a> from DePaul President Robert Manuel. The number of new graduate students from other countries has dropped by nearly 62% compared to last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSignificant shifts in the higher education landscape continue to create a palpable sense of fear and anxiety in our community,\u201d Manuel said. \u201cWe are all worried about the safety of our community members, the safeguarding of academic freedom, and the new financial challenges driven by changes in federal funding and visa processing. These concerns are so severe and debilitating that it\u2019s getting hard to recognize higher education anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drop in international student enrollment and other financial challenges, like the increasing cost of financial aid and employee benefits, Manuel said, is forcing the school to pursue immediate spending reductions. The president said the school is considering cutting executive pay, freezing staff hiring and slowing faculty appointments.<\/p>\n<p>Public universities are feeling impacts too. International student enrollment at the University of Illinois Chicago, the city\u2019s largest public university, dropped by 4.9%, a spokesperson said, driven primarily by a decrease in the number of graduate students from other countries.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmi.illinois.edu\/stuenr\/#foreign\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>Institutional data<\/u><\/a> show the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign saw a decrease in international graduate student enrollment, although foreign undergraduate students on that campus increased. In total the school enrolled 13,268 international students this fall, 45% of whom are undergraduates and 55% of whom are professional and graduate students. Total UIUC enrollment is nearly 61,000.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/opendoorsdata.org\/data\/international-students\/leading-institutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>Institute of International Education<\/u><\/a>, which tracks the number of students from other countries studying at American campuses, UIUC serves the second-largest number of international students of any U.S. public university. Most are from <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/news\/2025\/06\/04\/university-illinois-chinese-student-visa-foreign-international\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>China<\/u><\/a>, India and South Korea, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmi.illinois.edu\/stuenr\/#foreign\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>UIUC data<\/u><\/a> show.<\/p>\n<p>Neither UIUC or UIC officials responded to questions about how fluctuations in international student enrollment are impacting their institutions\u2019 finances.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Losing students, losing revenue<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>As Illinois has <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/education\/2023\/04\/07\/whats-driving-all-the-faculty-strikes-at-illinois-public-universities\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>decreased taxpayer funding<\/u><\/a> for its public universities, many have come to rely on international students to boost revenue. That source of funds has likely become more important as President Donald Trump <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/education\/2025\/05\/15\/its-just-devastating-chicago-state-president-says-of-federal-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>has stripped millions in federal grants<\/u><\/a> from colleges in <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/health\/2025\/05\/25\/northwestern-uic-medical-researchers-diabetes-hiv-trump-funding-budget-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>Illinois<\/u><\/a> and nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Students from other countries pay much more to attend public colleges. At UIUC, an international undergraduate studying engineering could pay <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/cost.illinois.edu\/Home\/Cost\/I\/U\/10KP5333NONE\/15\/120258\/120258\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>almost $70,000<\/u><\/a> this year for tuition, housing and fees. According to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nafsa.org\/isev\/reports\/state?year=2023&amp;state=IL\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>NAFSA: Association of International Education<\/u><\/a>, more than 60,000 people from other countries studied in Illinois in the 2023-2024 school year and contributed $2.4 billion to the state\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Across the country the nonprofit predicted <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nafsa.org\/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>a 30% to 40% decline<\/u><\/a> in new international students this school year, resulting in a 15% drop in overall enrollment in American higher education, $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Federal officials have <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/global\/international-students-us\/2025\/07\/17\/f-1-j-1-student-visa-issuances-dropped-may\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>slowed down<\/u><\/a> student visa appointments, proposed <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/5474369-trump-administration-limits-student-visas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>four-year limits<\/u><\/a> for visa holders and started screening visa applicants\u2019 <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2025\/07\/09\/international-students-visas-trump-social-media-online-vetting\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>social media accounts<\/u><\/a> for speech said to threaten national security.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring federal agents <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/education\/2025\/04\/16\/visa-terminations-causing-panic-for-illinois-students-and-educators\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>abruptly revoked<\/u><\/a> the visas of thousands of students across the United States before <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/education\/2025\/04\/30\/uic-student-has-legal-status-restored-but-only-after-leaving-us\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>reversing course<\/u><\/a>. This month the Trump administration offered universities priority funding consideration if they agreed to, among several other things, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/5558934-colleges-reject-donald-trump-administration-compact\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>cap international student enrollment<\/u><\/a> at 15%.<\/p>\n<p>These actions, alongside recent immigration raids across the Chicago area, have made some foreign students reconsider studying here \u2014 and have prevented others from getting visas to be able to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe perception of these schools is that international students will not be safe,\u201d said Micol Bez, an international student earning her PhD at Northwestern. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a perception \u2013 it\u2019s a fact \u2026 .
