{"id":2611,"date":"2025-10-08T16:13:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T16:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=2611"},"modified":"2025-10-08T16:13:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T16:13:05","slug":"chicago-artist-tonika-lewis-johnson-among-22-winners-of-coveted-macarthur-genius-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firearmupgrades.com\/?p=2611","title":{"rendered":"Chicago artist Tonika Lewis Johnson among 22 winners of coveted MacArthur \u2018genius grant\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Chicago artist Tonika Lewis Johnson can now add \u201cgenius\u201d to her already robust resume.<\/p>\n<p>The Englewood native \u2014 who is known for her large-scale, social-justice-oriented work, including the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foldedmapproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>Folded Map Project<\/u><\/a> \u2014 is among this year\u2019s class of MacArthur Fellows.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called \u201cgenius grants\u201d have been awarded annually by the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation since 1981 and come with $800,000 in no-strings-attached funding for each recipient. They recognize \u201cexceptional creativity\u201d and potential for future work, according to the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>This year, there are 22 fellows from around the world, whose areas of expertise range from visual art and filmmaking to chemical engineering and astrophysics. California author Tommy Orange is also among this year\u2019s recipients. His novel \u201cThere There\u201d was the Chicago Public Library\u2019s <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/culture-the-arts\/2023\/09\/06\/there-there-is-the-2023-one-book-one-chicago-pick\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>citywide read<\/u><\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Other Midwest honorees include \u00c1ngel F. I\u2019m just really happy to kind of be a mascot for the genius that always existed here. The project helps residents repair homes and secure vacant lots.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><span class=\"line\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">\n<p>Candace Dane Chambers\/Sun-Times<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With more solid ground beneath her, Johnson said she\u2019s eager to bring her work to exhibition spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not an exhibiting artist, since a lot of my work is participatory in the built environment,\u201d she said. \u201cNow that I have a large body of work, I think I\u2019m now at the point where I can translate it into an exhibition space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also wants to continue helping up-and-coming artists establish themselves as businesses. And, she\u2019s working with other community partners to solidify 63rd Street in Englewood as an arts and culture destination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want to revitalize that corridor, but the barrier that we have is the negative narrative,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what you develop in a neighborhood, if the entire country, city and world is told to not go there, then you can\u2019t have foot traffic. And foot traffic is what anything needs. So I think arts and culture engagement is a way to serve as an invitation for people to get used to coming to a neighborhood they\u2019ve been told not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coveted MacArthur award arrives in a moment when arts funding has been disrupted on the federal level. In recent months, President Donald Trump\u2019s administration has retracted money awarded through the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/arts-culture\/2025\/05\/06\/nea-grants-trump-chicago-cultural-events\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>National Endowment for the Arts<\/u><\/a> and changed the rules of who qualifies.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Chicago residents Ling Ma and Ebony G. Patterson were <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/entertainment-and-culture\/2024\/10\/01\/macarthur-genius-grants-fellowships-ling-ma-ebony-patterson\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"><u>among those selected<\/u><\/a> for the MacArthur Fellowship.
