Canada, the U.K., Australia and other countries on Sunday announced they will formally recognize Palestine as a state \u2014 a move that has long been opposed by the U.S. and Israel.<\/p>\n

“We recognized the State of Israel more than 75 years ago as a homeland for the Jewish people. Today we join over 150 countries who recognize a Palestinian State also. A pledge to the Palestinian and Israeli people, that there can be a better future,” U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a speech on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday recognizing Palestine as a state “empowers those who seek peaceful coexistence and the end of Hamas.”<\/p>\n
