Netanyahu reportedly discussed several options for continuing the war in Gaza, with the goal of presenting the plan at a broader cabinet meeting later this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is still necessary to complete the defeat of the enemy in Gaza, release our hostages, and ensure that Gaza never again constitutes a threat to Israel,\u201d Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/pages\/event-recruitment050825\">said<\/a> on Tuesday, reiterating Israel\u2019s three wartime goals. \u201cWe are not giving up on any of these missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu appears to favor a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-considers-full-gaza-takeover-more-die-hunger-2025-08-05\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=080525&amp;lctg=607f1056abd4f461f466319b\">complete military takeover<\/a> of Gaza, which would mark a significant shift in Israel\u2019s policy since it withdrew from the territory in 2005. Such an operation would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/gaza\/israel-netanyahu-gaza-expected-occupy-plan-rcna223060\">align with calls<\/a> from Netanyahu\u2019s far-right coalition partners, who have condemned any cease-fire and hostage release deal that does not include \u201ctotal victory\u201d over Hamas. Netanyahu has become increasingly reliant on these officials to maintain power.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/middle-east\/ultranationalist-israel-ben-gvir-minister-al-asqa-mosque-temple-mount-rcna222835\">called<\/a> on Israel to \u201cconquer\u201d Gaza while leading prayers at Jerusalem\u2019s most contentious holy site. Ben-Gvir and Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have also pushed for Israel to rebuild settlements in Gaza, which would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2024\/08\/12\/icj-israel-palestine-gaza-occupation-settlers\/\">violation of international law<\/a> and draw widespread condemnation.<\/p>\n<p>Appeasing the far right would go against rising anti-government sentiment in Israel, notably among the families of hostages in Gaza, who have argued that Netanyahu has not done enough to secure the captives\u2019 release and is extending the war unnecessarily to remain in office. The United Nations Security Council <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/08\/04\/israel-hostages-videos-hamas-gaza-starvation-hunger-crisis\/\">convened<\/a> an emergency session on Tuesday to discuss the <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/08\/04\/israel-hostages-videos-hamas-gaza-starvation-hunger-crisis\/\">hostage crisis<\/a>; roughly 50 people remain captive in Gaza, only around 20 of whom are believed to still be alive.<\/p>\n<p>Still, experts suggested that the threat of a full takeover could be a tactic to pressure Hamas into concessions. Cease-fire talks have <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/07\/25\/israel-hamas-cease-fire-talks-us-gaza-aid-hunger-crisis-france-palestine-statehood\/\">largely stalled<\/a>, as Israel seeks to expand its military presence in Gaza and Hamas demands that the territory\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/08\/01\/could-images-of-the-famine-in-gaza-change-israeli-public-opinion\/\">hunger crisis<\/a> be addressed before it returns to the negotiating table. At least 175 Palestinians (including around 93 children) have died from starvation or malnutrition since the Israel-Hamas war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-says-it-will-allow-controlled-entry-goods-into-gaza-via-merchants-2025-08-05\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=080525&amp;lctg=607f1056abd4f461f466319b\">announced<\/a> on Tuesday that it will allow the gradual and controlled entry of goods into Gaza through local private merchants. Approved aid includes basic food products, baby food, and hygiene supplies. However, U.N. and local authorities argued that such actions would not be enough to fully address mass starvation in Gaza. They suggested that Israel needs to admit around <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/05\/1163681\">600 aid trucks daily<\/a> (the number that Israel allowed to enter Gaza before the war) to meet humanitarian requirements.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>Today\u2019s Most Read<\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><strong>What We\u2019re Following<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>U.S. deportation scheme. <\/strong>Rwanda <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigrants-deportees-rwanda-us-bb5edea43bb470e76af3ecee5ddad10c?user_email=6b04284e4d00370f16d3dac0a626e01bf24d86e4d6995646867da6aa680488d0&amp;utm_medium=Morning_Wire&amp;utm_source=Sailthru_AP&amp;utm_campaign=Morning%20Wire%20Aug%205%2C%202025&amp;utm_term=Morning%20Wire%20Subscribers\">became<\/a> the third African country on Tuesday to agree to accept U.S. deportees as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/03\/17\/trump-deportations-immigration-asylum-guantanamo-el-salvador-prisons-bukele\/\">White House plan<\/a> to use third-party nations to remove migrants from U.S. soil. \u201cRwanda has agreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants, in part because nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement, and our societal values are founded on reintegration and rehabilitation,\u201d Rwandan government spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/rwanda-reached-deal-with-us-take-up-250-migrants-government-says-2025-08-04\/\">Yolande Makolo<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>In the past few months, the United States has sent 13 men that it described as dangerous to South Sudan and Eswatini after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of their deportations and those individuals\u2019 home countries refused to take them back. Since January, U.S. President Donald Trump has also deported hundreds of people to Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador, the last of which has placed many deportees in the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/03\/20\/trump-deportations-el-salvador-prisons-bukele-human-rights\/\">notorious megaprison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that Rwanda has agreed to receive another country\u2019s deportees. In 2022, Rwanda <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/06\/28\/britains-rwanda-deportation-policy-is-a-cruel-expensive-failure\/\">attracted outrage<\/a> from human rights activists for <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/04\/20\/britain-rwanda-refugees-asylum-kagame-authoritarianism\/\">striking a deal<\/a> with the United Kingdom to accept asylum-seekers. But the deal was <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2024\/01\/23\/uk-rwanda-deal-migrant-crisis-sunak-kagame\/\">deemed unethical<\/a> and ultimately scrapped by Britain\u2019s Labour Party when it took over in 2024. The U.K. Supreme Court ruled that the proposal was unlawful in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turn on the AC. <\/strong>Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/japan-sets-record-high-temperatures-worries-mount-over-rice-crops-2025-08-05\/\">recorded<\/a> its highest temperature ever on Tuesday, reaching 107.2 degrees Fahrenheit in the city of Isesaki. The reading caps weeks of record-setting heat in Japan, with average temperatures in July spiking for a third year in a row and the country\u2019s northeastern region registering critically low levels of rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>Government officials advised residents to remain indoors; more than 53,000 people have sought medical treatment for heat stroke this summer, according to Japan\u2019s Fire and Disaster Management Agency. Experts are worried that the intense temperatures could further damage the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-rice-explainer-shortages-rising-prices-agriculture-6e21bc9017c8f6d8c0a1f179e50e975f\">acute rice shortage<\/a>. \u201cWe need to act with speed and a sense of crisis to prevent damage,\u201d Japanese Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said, adding that the government will offer measures to help combat pests and tackle drought.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures around the world have soared in recent years due to the climate crisis, and scientists have warned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/japan-2-heat-records-one-day-107-degrees\/\">heat wave<\/a> in Japan could still worsen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Under house arrest. <\/strong>Brazil\u2019s Supreme Court on Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/brazils-bolsonaro-arrested-adding-tensions-with-trump-2025-08-04\/\">issued<\/a> a house arrest order for former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing a criminal trial for allegedly orchestrating a <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/02\/21\/bolsonaro-brazil-coup-plot-lula-alckmin-trump-moraes\/\">coup attempt<\/a> in 2022.
