His condition remains serious. Bogot\u00e1 Mayor Carlos Fernando Gal\u00e1n told reporters Sunday that Uribe had undergone surgery and was now in &#8220;the critical hours&#8221; of recovery.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The incident is the first high-profile assassination attempt on a politician in decades, raising fears of a return to a bloody era of political violence in Colombia ahead of contentious elections scheduled for May 31 2026.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this moment, Miguel is fighting for his life. We ask God to guide the hands of the doctors treating him,&#8221; wrote Uribe&#8217;s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, on her <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MiguelUribeT\/status\/1931537398359286141\" target=\"_blank\">husband&#8217;s X account <\/a>on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Uribe is a far-right politician considered to be controversial former president \u00c1lvaro Uribe&#8217;s protege.  The men are not related. A Colombian right-wing opposition senator and candidate for next year&#8217;s presidential election, Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, was shot and wounded in Bogota on June 7, 2025.<br \/>\n                <b class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    RAUL ARBOLEDA\/AFP<\/p>\n<p>                <\/b><br \/>\n                <b class=\"hide-caption\"><b>hide caption<\/b><\/b>\n            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>            <b class=\"toggle-caption\"><b>toggle caption<\/b><\/b>\n    <\/div>\n<p>    <span class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>        RAUL ARBOLEDA\/AFP<\/p>\n<p>    <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is unclear who ordered the attack, which happened at around 5pm in the Fontib\u00f3n neighborhood of Bogot\u00e1, but the perpetrators &#8220;almost certainly hired hitmen,&#8221; according to Elizabeth Dickinson, Senior Colombia Analyst at Crisis Group International.<\/p>\n<p>Police apprehended the underage shooter shortly after he fled the scene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whoever ordered this assassination\u2026 very clearly had the intention of throwing gas onto a fire, trying to be incendiary in an electoral context that is already deeply polarized,&#8221; Dickinson told NPR.<\/p>\n<p>The attack comes amid deepening political polarization between Petro \u2013 a leftist former-guerrilla \u2013 and an emboldened right-wing opposition, who blame the president for the country&#8217;s deteriorating security situation.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;Evidently this [attack] shows an erosion of Colombia&#8217;s security and political climate in the short term,&#8221; Sergio Guzm\u00e1n, Director at Colombia Risk Analysis, a security think tank, told NPR.<\/p>\n<p>Vicky D\u00e1vila, the conservative frontrunner in the upcoming presidential election, said Petro was &#8220;the only one responsible&#8221; for the assassination attempt in an X post on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecRubio\/status\/1931529095222894940\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Rubio<\/a> \u2014 who has previously dubbed  President Petro &#8220;Gustavo Ch\u00e1vez&#8221; \u2014 also blamed the Colombian leader and his language.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a direct threat to democracy and the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government,&#8221; wrote Rubio in an X post last night.<\/p>\n<p>But Petro joined voices across the political spectrum condemning the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Colombia and its eternal violence. They kill the son and the mother. Respect life, that is the red line,&#8221; said the<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/petrogustavo\/status\/1931500641194479719\" target=\"_blank\"> president on X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His comment referred to Uribe&#8217;s mother, journalist Diana Turbay, who was kidnapped by Pablo Escobar&#8217;s Medellin Cartel and killed during a botched rescue operation in 1991.
