A \u201cyoung, vibrant and hard working\u201d Chicago police officer who was shot in the chest during a pursuit Thursday night in Chatham on the South Side has died, police said. <\/p>\n

The officer, who was 36 and a mother of a \u201cvery young daughter,\u201d was a four-year veteran assigned to the Gresham District tactical team, Chicago police Supt. Larry Snelling told reporters early Friday. <\/p>\n

Officer Krystal Rivera was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County medical examiner\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a hero, and she lost her life tragically,\u201d Snelling said. <\/p>\n

She was young, vibrant and a hard worker,\u201d said Snelling, who added she had \u201calready processed two other guns working that day.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a working police officer trying to keep the streets safe,\u201d he said. \u201cWorking hard, extremely hard, to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis young woman served honorably and courageously,\u201d said Mayor Brandon Johnson, who spoke at the early morning briefing. \u201cHer young, energetic and bold approach towards keeping us safe is the memory that we will honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rivera told the Sun-Times when she graduated from the Police Academy in 2021 that she always knew she wanted to be an officer. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s a privilege,\u201d she said then. \u201cI come from a family of serving. To help people in need, that\u2019s my calling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rivera was on patrol with other officers when they tried to conduct an investigatory stop on a male suspect in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue about 9:50 p.m., the police said in a written statement. <\/p>\n

They said that, as the officers approached, the suspect ran into a nearby building. When officers pursued him into the building, they were confronted by an armed man, and an officer discharged his weapon, police said. <\/p>\n

The officer was shot in her chest, and the gunman ran from the home but was taken into custody, according to the statement. <\/p>\n

\u201cShots fired at police,\u201d an officer screamed over the radio while calling for assistance. <\/p>\n

Officers attempting to rush the wounded officer for treatment crashed, and their car caught fire, sources said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe transport vehicle is on fire,\u201d an officer said over police radio.<\/p>\n

The wounded officer, who sources say was shot with a rifle, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she died, police said. <\/p>\n

Another officer sustained a wrist injury and was taken to the hospital in fair condition. No additional injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

Three guns were recovered, and at least two people were taken into custody. No charges have been announced. <\/p>\n

\u201cPlease understand what these officers go through on a daily basis,\u2019\u2019 Snelling said. They \u201cprotect people they never met. These are exemplary human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating as is the Investigative Response Team. <\/p>\n

As of about 8:45 a.m., a few officers were walking in and out of three-story courtyard apartment building, 8208\/8210 S Drexel Ave. One officer carried a paper bag from the building to a squad car on the street. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s no police tape but an officer instructed media to stay off the block.<\/p>\n
