More on that from Rishi <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/22\/elon-musk-donald-trump-doge-tesla-starlink-gulf\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s on tap for the day: Israeli Prime Minister <strong>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong> faces growing pressure over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, drone warfare between <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> and <strong>Russia<\/strong> sharply escalates, and <strong>Iran nuclear deal<\/strong> negotiations hit a snag.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>As the Israeli military escalates ground operations in Gaza, Netanyahu is facing rising domestic and international pressure to shift course amid a worsening humanitarian crisis there.<\/p>\n<p>In a sign that he\u2019s beginning to feel the heat, Netanyahu on May 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mideast-wars-israel-gaza-hamas-hostages-18-05-2025-f325044576f1ac31e6083622242c9990\">announced<\/a> that Israel would partially end its nearly three-month blockade on aid into Gaza. The blockade, which sparked concerns of famine, was condemned worldwide. Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-gaza-war-netanyahu-faces-sanctions-threat-palestinians-starvation\/\">said<\/a> his decision came after warnings from allies, including U.S. senators, who told him \u201cimages of mass famine\u201d would jeopardize support for Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Even Trump, whose 2024 election victory was seen as a win for Netanyahu, has in recent days <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-hamas-gaza-war-trump-says-people-starving\/\">raised alarm<\/a> about Palestinians starving. Trump officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/rubio-optimistic-gaza-war-could-end-soon-but-admits-having-felt-same-way-before\/\">have also been critical<\/a> of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, warning that it\u2019s undermining Israel\u2019s standing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On different pages.<\/strong> The U.S. president did not make a stop in Israel during his trip to the Middle East last week. And although Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/16\/nir-barkat-interview-trump-netanyahu-israel-relationship-iran-houthis-gaza\/\">denied<\/a> that Trump was snubbing Netanyahu, this came amid questions over whether the Trump administration has been <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/14\/trump-israel-president-netanyahu-different\/\">bypassing<\/a> the Israeli leader on various issues.<\/p>\n<p>Trump 2.0 has still been very supportive of Israel\u2014but not to the extent that Netanyahu appeared to expect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/06\/world\/middleeast\/trump-israel-support.html\">based on their history<\/a>. At a time when Netanyahu says Israel is deploying a \u201cmassive force to take control of all of the Gaza Strip,\u201d the White House this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/trump-has-made-it-very-clear-he-wants-end-to-gaza-war-says-white-house\/\">said<\/a> Trump has \u201cmade it very clear\u201d that he wants the war to end.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of France, the United Kingdom, and Canada also issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/joint-statement-from-the-leaders-of-the-united-kingdom-france-and-canada-on-the-situation-in-gaza-and-the-west-bank\">fierce criticism<\/a> of the Israeli government this week. They described the situation in Gaza as \u201cintolerable\u201d and threatened to take \u201cconcrete actions\u201d if Israel didn\u2019t \u201ccease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Israel\u2019s traditional allies are growing impatient with its actions in the war, they were also <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-embassy-washington-jewish-museum-shooting-0dd228eaea670cd06416b9a777912748\">quick to condemn<\/a> the killings of two Israeli Embassy staffers\u2014\u200bYaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim\u2014in Washington on Wednesday. The suspect in the shooting, which occurred outside the Capital Jewish Museum, reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/shooting-dc-jewish-museum-rcna208427\">shouted<\/a> \u201cFree Palestine\u201d as he was being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu and far-right ministers in his government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2025-05-22\/ty-article\/.premium\/netanyahu-blood-libels-against-israel-cost-lives-trump-obviously-antisemitic\/00000196-f69e-de64-a7f6-febf5a870000\">blamed the killings<\/a> on critics of the war in Gaza, including opposition politician Yair Golan, who recently warned that Israel was at risk of becoming a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/middle-east\/ex-israel-general-warns-gaza-pariah-rcna207615\">pariah state<\/a>\u201d because of its actions in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Golan, a former general, said, \u201cA sane country does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a pastime, and does not engage in mass population displacement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Criticism at home.<\/strong> Though Golan\u2019s provocative words sparked outrage among politicians in Netanyahu\u2019s coalition, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2025\/05\/22\/israel-gaza-war-criticism-netanyahu\/c2198fc0-36c4-11f0-9c9e-0db2d748bea7_story.html\">said<\/a> Golan\u2019s comments reflect \u201cwhat many people think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/an-exhausted-israeli-public-turns-against-war-in-gaza-233e133a?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AerBZYMPCNNDSPI5NpY3-fVmGUkfquBk9HA4dOz862coooFFoBjrAfvdF7_8iyTVXrc%3D&amp;gaa_ts=682f60c9&amp;gaa_sig=oQFGnShJ_2cAqW9fm2m0GnIWxTkRS8JNB_XC2tZbMqwjl7eF76ozYcKUrkXm28XFnqpyfp20JGKqxZvGHLV2Mg%3D%3D\">polling<\/a> has shown that a strong majority of Israelis (about 70 percent) would support ending the war if the remaining 58 hostages held by Hamas, of whom 20 are thought to still be alive, were released. Hostage family members, who are among Netanyahu\u2019s biggest critics, have also expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/19\/israel-gaza-offensive-hostage-families\/\">opposition to continuing the war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yotam Cohen, the brother of Nimrod Cohen, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier who was captured by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, and is believed to still be alive, told SitRep that the \u201cvast majority\u201d of Israelis \u201cwant the hostages to be released and brought back even in the price of ending the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cohen said the Israeli government is ignoring the will of the people. \u201cEnding the war would be the right thing to do for the hostages, for us as hostage families, and for the entirety of the people of Israel,\u201d Cohen said.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the war have contended that Netanyahu\u2014who is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/netanyahu-arrives-in-court-to-continue-his-testimony-in-his-corruption-trial-e6e743ddf3bf4a59bbc61d23a47b3737\">on trial for corruption<\/a>\u2014is only continuing it for political reasons, as far-right members of his fragile coalition have threatened to collapse the government if Netanyahu ends the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that the prime minister and his coalition partners are not listening to what the people of Israel have been wanting,\u201d Ruby Chen, the father of American Israeli IDF soldier and hostage Itay Chen, who is believed to have been killed on Oct. 7, 2023, told SitRep on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>As the longest-serving prime minister in Israel\u2019s history, Netanyahu has exhibited a remarkable ability for political survival throughout his career. Though the Israeli leader finds himself in an increasingly precarious position, it\u2019s far too early to make predictions on Netanyahu\u2019s political future. And despite growing opposition to his prosecution of the Gaza war, Netanyahu doesn\u2019t seem to be fully backing down and on Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/pmo-trump-expressed-support-for-our-war-aims-in-phone-call-with-netanyahu\/\">said<\/a> Trump still supports his objectives.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><em>What should be high on your radar, if it isn\u2019t already.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Drone strikes.<\/strong> Russia\u2019s defense ministry on Thursday said it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/22\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-drones.html\">shot down<\/a> 485 drones launched by Ukraine this week, including 63 over its capital region. Meanwhile, Russia launched 128 drones at Ukraine on Thursday, damaging residential buildings in the Dnipro and Kharkiv regions. In Kyiv, falling debris from intercepted drones landed in a schoolyard, the <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/22\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-drones.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The war between the two countries has intensified following an inconclusive two-hour <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/19\/trump-putin-phone-call-cease-fire-russia-ukraine-zelensky\/\">phone call<\/a> between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday that failed to produce meaningful progress towards a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/1925198869463265718\">posted<\/a> on X on Wednesday that he had spoken with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and that the two discussed possible \u201csanctions that can have a real impact on Russia\u201d as well as \u201ccontinuing negotiations with the Russian side regarding a ceasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s Golden Dome.<\/strong> Trump on Tuesday unveiled plans to develop his oft-touted \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/videos\/president-trump-makes-an-announcement-with-the-secretary-of-defense\/\">Golden Dome<\/a>\u201d missile defense shield for the United States, which he said would \u201cprotect our homeland from the threat of foreign missile attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump said the system, modeled after Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2021\/06\/03\/israels-iron-dome-wont-last-forever\/\">Iron Dome<\/a>, is expected to be operational within three years, adding that Canada had expressed interest in being covered by the system as well. Trump\u2019s budget bill passed by the House on Thursday includes $25 billion to build the Golden Dome, but Trump said the total cost is expected to eventually rise to $175 billion.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also not a new concept, having originally been <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/04\/22\/trump-reagan-pentagon-defense-star-wars-golden-dome-musk-hegseth\/\">proposed<\/a> by President Ronald Reagan back in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<div id=\"attachment_1196439\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone none\">            <span style=\"padding-bottom:66.69921875%;&#10;        \" class=\"image-attachment -ratioscale\"><br \/>\n        <br \/>\n        <\/span><figcaption style=\"height:0;opacity:0;\">Donald Trump Jr. speaks during a session on \u201cInvesting in America\u201d at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha on May 21, days after his father, U.S. President Donald Trump, visited the country and signed deals worth .2 trillion. The session was <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/12\/trump-gulf-visit-saudi-uae-qatar\/\">previously titled<\/a> \u201cMonetizing MAGA: Investing in Trump\u2019s America\u201d but was later changed with no explanation.<span class=\"attribution\">Karim Jaafar\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Negotiations over Iran\u2019s nuclear program appear to be on <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/20\/iran-nuclear-negotiations-trump-uranium-enrichment-khamenei-talks\/\">shaky ground<\/a> amid disagreements over uranium enrichment, with the Trump administration saying it won\u2019t agree to a deal that allows Iran to continue enriching uranium and Iran\u2019s leaders insisting that the country has the right to do so for civilian purposes.<\/p>\n<p>With Iran and the United States set to hold a fifth round of nuclear talks in Rome on Friday, SitRep on Tuesday caught up with former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who served as lead negotiator for the Obama administration on the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, for her take on the state of the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Sherman expressed concern over \u201cwhether the administration is ready to do the very hard work to even get a framework for a deal or whether the administration\u2014as it is doing in the Russia-Ukraine situation\u2014is preparing to back off and let others take whatever action they desire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, given the political support Trump has in the United States and Iran\u2019s relatively weakened position compared with 2015, Sherman said it\u2019s \u201cpossible to reach a short-term agreement in a fairly swift period of time and then lay the grounds for a final agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, she cautioned that \u201cthis takes hard work\u201d and \u201ctakes constancy that we\u2019ve seen ease up of late, in part because [Trump envoy] Steve Witkoff has been tasked with doing three major negotiations simultaneously, which is pretty tough to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Monday, May 26:<\/strong> Nicusor Dan is sworn in as Romania\u2019s president after an election saga in which he narrowly beat his <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2025\/05\/15\/simion-romania-president-far-right\/\">far-right opponent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s Parliament holds its first session since the election of Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia hosts the 46th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, May 28:<\/strong> U.S. Vice President J.D.
