For decades, Fourny says his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.champagne-veuve-fourny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">business<\/a> has relied on a vital market: the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, American consumers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.champagne.fr\/en\/find-out-more\/champagne-at-a-glance\" target=\"_blank\">imported<\/a> 26.9 million bottles of Champagne, making the U.S. the world&#8217;s largest Champagne export market.<\/p>\n<p>Shipments to the U.S. accounted for 18% of Fourny&#8217;s exports last year. After the 90-day period, tariffs could rise again, possibly back to 20%, or even higher.<\/p>\n<p>For Fourny, this unpredictable environment means it&#8217;s time to look beyond the U.S. market, seeking stability in places like Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot wait for a decision,&#8221; Fourny says of the impending tariffs. &#8220;We have a company to run, and we need to act in order to keep our business moving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\"><strong>A fragile ecosystem<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The United States has long been the largest importer of Champagne, helping drive the industry&#8217;s growth.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>But on the other side of the Atlantic, American wine importers say they&#8217;re feeling the squeeze, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just a horrific kind of self-inflicted wound on American companies,&#8221; says Harmon Skurnik, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skurnik.com\/harmon-skurnik\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York-based importer<\/a> and board member of the U.S. Wine Trade Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>In a worst-case scenario, he says, wines from abroad could become more expensive and harder to find on U.S. shelves. And homegrown American wines can&#8217;t simply fill in the gap.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESNX-S1-5369544-102\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t buy as much American wine, not to mention the fact that these products are just not as fungible,&#8221; Skurnik says. &#8220;The French have a term called <em>terroir<\/em>, meaning the wine reflects the place it comes from. A French Chardonnay doesn&#8217;t taste anything like an American Chardonnay. These products are unique.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>American winemakers, especially those in California, are worried as well.
