30px)\" class=\"img\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"\/>\n        <\/picture>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"caption-wrap\">\n<div class=\"caption\" aria-label=\"Image caption\">\n<p>\n                Women wearing Vietnamese national flag T-shirts walk past the Saigon Centre shopping complex in Ho Chi Minh City on April 29, 2025, ahead of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.<br \/>\n                <b class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    MANAN VATSYAYANA\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                <\/b><br \/>\n                <b class=\"hide-caption\"><b>hide caption<\/b><\/b>\n            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>            <b class=\"toggle-caption\"><b>toggle caption<\/b><\/b>\n    <\/div>\n<p>    <span class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>        MANAN VATSYAYANA\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>    <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam \u2014 U.S. officials are not attending the main public event commemorating the end of the Vietnam war in Ho Chi Minh City this week, according to a guest list released by the organizers and seen by NPR.<\/p>\n<p>Top of the list, announced at the final rehearsal for the April 30 military parade, are Vietnam&#8217;s biggest friends \u2014 Laos, Cambodia, Cuba and China.<\/p>\n<p>On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese troops stormed the Independence Palace in central Saigon \u2014 now known as Ho Chi Minh City \u2014 ending the almost 20-year war that caused great losses to both North and South Vietnam, as well as the South&#8217;s ally the United States.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The day is now celebrated in Vietnam as Reunification Day.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/22\/world\/asia\/us-diplomats-vietnam-war-anniversary-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times reported<\/a> that the Trump administration had told its senior diplomats in Vietnam not to take part in events related to the anniversary including a reception on April 29 and the military parade the next day.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESG-S1-63164-100\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>While not confirming the report, a State Department spokesperson told NPR that the United States and Vietnam &#8220;have a robust bilateral relationship and we are committed to deepening and broadening those ties.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">From adversaries to partners<\/h3>\n<p>For its part, Vietnam&#8217;s foreign ministry said that Hanoi and Washington have now formed &#8220;a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The comprehensive strategic partnership is the highest level of bilateral relations between Vietnam and any other country.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry also said that foreign guests from more than 20 countries and organizations, including the U.S., will participate in the celebration this year.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Apparent snub<\/h3>\n<p>Several U.S. veterans and former war correspondents have arrived in Ho Chi Minh City ahead of the anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the apparent snub by U.S. government officials led to some disappointment among the Vietnamese. 74-year-old war veteran Phung Xuan Hai told NPR that each country &#8220;has its own thinking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;Even if they&#8217;re our comprehensive strategic partners, they have a different nature,&#8221; Hai said, adding: &#8220;However, it shouldn&#8217;t, and doesn&#8217;t, affect our joyful occasion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESG-S1-63164-101\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Event organizers said that more than 13,000 people, including the army, the police and civilians, are taking part in the main parade.
