BOSTON \u2014 The White Sox put left-hander Martin Perez<\/b> on the 15-day injured list Saturday after he left their 10-3 loss Friday to the Red Sox with a strained left forearm.<\/p>\n
Perez had imaging done around two hours before the game.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We were at the point where we knew that it was at least going to be an IL [stint],\u2019\u2019 manager Will Venable<\/b> said before the game. \u2018\u2018[Perez] got some image on it maybe a half-hour [or] an hour ago, and [we\u2019re] just going through those results now. We knew it was bad enough that we needed to get some help here.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Venable said the Sox will decide how to fill Perez\u2019s spot in the rotation once they have more clarity on how long he\u2019ll be out.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We can figure it out, and what happens today [a 4-3 loss in 10 innings] might impact it. We just have to take today, evaluate where we\u2019re at and then build a plan if somebody who we want to use on Martin\u2019s day is available to pitch this week. We have to be thoughtful of that and what it means for the future.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Left-hander Jared Shuster<\/b> was celebrating Triple-A Charlotte\u2019s 2-1 walk-off victory Friday when he got the news that he would be flying to Boston to join the Sox.<\/p>\n
In 11\u201e innings as a reliever with the Knights, Shuster had a 1.59 ERA. He credited Charlotte manager Sergio Santos<\/b> and his staff with getting him on track. He pitched 1\u201e scoreless innings Saturday against the Red Sox.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018Feel like I\u2019m in a good spot pounding the zone,\u2019\u2019 Shuster said before the game. \u2018\u2018All my pitches are working well.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Shuster won\u2019t fill Perez\u2019s spot in the rotation, but he\u2019s someone whom the Sox can call on to pitch multiple innings.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018It could be a combination of Bryse Wilson<\/b>, Tyler Gilbert<\/b>,\u2019\u2019 Venable said of options to fill Perez\u2019s spot. \u2018\u2018Shuster brings that length with him. Mike Vasil<\/b> \u2014 we have a number of guys who have some length to them.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Shuster, whom the Braves drafted No. 25 overall in 2020, appeared in 39 games for the Sox last season and had a 4.30 ERA.<\/p>\n
The Red Sox activated former Sox closer Liam Hendriks<\/b> before the game. He hasn\u2019t pitched in a major-league game since June 9, 2023, after having Tommy John surgery on his right (pitching) elbow.<\/p>\n
Hendriks, who had 76 saves in his three seasons with the Sox, beat non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma in 2023.<\/p>\n
Venable didn\u2019t have any update about outfielder Mike Tauchman<\/b>, who suffered a strained right hamstring April 9 against the Guardians.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Reliever Fraser Ellard<\/b> (strained right hamstring) threw off a mound, and catcher Korey Lee<\/b> (sprained left ankle) caught him.<\/p>\n
Ellard went on the 15-day IL on April 11. Lee has been on the 10-day IL since injuring his ankle while trying to return to first base on a pickoff attempt April 9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
